It's Day 7 but part 2 of my vacation trip ideas with a little bit of history. I did a minor mix up with my previous post before this one. So todays post is Staple Bend Tunnel a part of the Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site, this location is near Mineral Point PA not far from Johnstown.

This tunnel was finished in June 1833, the Staple Bend tunnel was advertised as the first railroad tunnel in the United States. It was the third tunnel of any kind built in the US, the first tunnels were for other canals in Pennsylvania. The build started originally on November 21, 1831, during the worst time of the year. An interesting fact about this tunnel is that it was never used with a train only a mule/horse drawn train with the canal boats on a car. It is labeled as the first railroad tunnel in the country.

This tunnel isn't that long just a hare over 900 ft, nothing close to the tunnels in Gallitzin.

The hike back to the tunnel is worth it, you get to see some trains (ft away) and some historical signs along the way. If you sign up for the van tours at the main building at the APRR you will get a close up view of the tunnel.

It's day 8 of my vacation trip ideas with a little bit of history. Today is a simple one, Canal Basin Park in Hollidaysburg PA. The Main Line Canal went thru this part of Pennsylvania to connect Harrisburg to Pittsburgh. But what made this area unique was this was the start of the Allegheny Portage Railroad the only canal system to have a railroad. Canal Basin Park is a nice peaceful park near Everett Railroad Company and downtown Hollidaysburg.

Back at it with the vacation trip ideas with a little bit of history day 7. Today's post is Allegheny Portage Railroad National Historic Site in Cambria County PA. This National Historic Site is in two parts, Staple Bend Tunnel I'll have a separate post next.

APRR was the only canal system in the United States to have a railroad. The main line canal that it was apart of connected Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Lewistown to Johnstown and Pittsburgh. The original plan to conquer the Allegheny mountains was a tunnel, I believe it was a minimum of 4iles underground.bi can't imagine that, what a dangerous idea! So they came up with the idea of incline plans to get over the mountain with 10. The lowest number plane was on the Johnstown side.

Famous people traveled the Portage railroad like Charles Dickens, Ulysses S. Grant and Harriet Beecher Stowe to name a few.

There are guided walking, trail hikes and van tours available. Make sure you check it out. I need to get back down there to do a van tour, the last time I did one was before covid. And make sure you stay at The Gallitzin Tunnel Inn 😉 Tell Bob and Deb I sent you.

I have an update to share non Photography related.
Recently, my 3-month-old daughter was diagnosed with Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum (ACC), a condition my younger brother also has. To determine if I had the condition as well, I underwent a brain MRI last Thursday. During a follow-up appointment today, the doctor informed me that I also have ACC, despite never being formally diagnosed with it. Interestingly, my mother mentioned that I was expected to be born with Down Syndrome, but fortunately, that was not the case. At 35, I lead a fulfilling life, although I do experience some speech difficulties, often struggling to articulate my thoughts or speak impulsively. Additionally, I have a unique characteristic where my dominant eye is my left eye, while I am right-handed, and I had Lazy Eye surgery at the age of 2 or 3. I do remember being a pirate for Halloween haha. So I am now officially part of the ACC group and am embracing this aspect of my life without shame.

So I made a last second decision on my vacation trip ideas posts. I will try to do them 5 days a week. With work and lil one I keep busy. Plus I want to try and go trackside or Creek/river side more this summer. I'll mix up my vacation posts and life photos.
