When I am approached by a client to help them create portraits for their business profile images, my first step is always to sit down with them and chat with them in person to hear their reasons for creating new portraits at this time, to gauge and sense their personality, watch their authentic facial expressions, hear about their business successes and challenges, and about their favorite people, places, food, or whatever they love talking about. This allows me to bring these subjects back up during their session to reconnect them authentically to conveying their true personality so the image looks real and not "posey"!

When I recently sat down with Joanne Cash, I loved hearing about her many contributions to BNY Mellon, about her many travels...both for business and for pleasure....and about her upcoming milestone birthday celebration plans which also played into her new portraits! As a photographer, I get asked a lot of questions by my clients. I love answering them because it helps me connect with you and share my knowledge and experiences. I thought I could share three of the most FAQs I get, along with my answers...

Question: I’d love to have my portrait taken, but how can I feel relaxed if I don’t know how to pose?

Answer: It’s not your job to know how to pose, it’s mine to help you into the most complimentary poses. It takes years of studying specific lighting, camera lenses and angles, being aware of different face structures, body types, and body language to create the best composition for you. I’ve studied hundreds of master photographers to learn how they relax and pose their clients to look their best. And, the same poses don’t work for every person. I can guarantee you that you’ll be having so much fun that you won’t realize you’re posing!

Question: I’d love to have new portraits but I’d like to lose 20 pounds first. Should I wait until I lose the weight?

Answer: I have a two-part answer for you….I’d never want anyone to feel they have to do a new portrait if they are not comfortable with their size. However, my philosophy is that we are all so hard on ourselves and the same 20 pounds you may be “seeing” is often not even seen by others. And, with the study of camera lenses, angles, and poses that I direct you into, you’d be amazed that you don’t even see those extra pounds!

Question: What if I don’t like my images?

Answer: My one goal for every single portrait session is to my absolute best so that you love every single image to the point where you say, “WOW! I didn’t realize I was so beautiful!” or “I look GOOOOD!!” But, if I am totally off the mark for some reason, I’d want to sit down with you and ask you what or why you don’t like the images so I can get a better idea to know if it was that you didn’t like the work I did, or was it something you have always had a tendency to not liking about yourself? Whatever the reason, I’d want to have you help me understand so I could know and give you the choice of receiving a full refund, or have another portrait session at no additional expense so we can create the images that you really love.

"Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does." -William James

I have a pretty nasty case of Imposter Syndrome. Of course, I didn't have a name for it throughout my 20s-60s, but that didn't make it any easier to deal with. I always hoped I'd get over the doubt and fear of making mistakes, but I was finally able to get to a point where I figured out how to accept it, let it just hang around anyway, but then still get around it!

One day, I read..."the world needs you to be the best version of yourself! And the only thing that matters is how YOU feel, not what others think. What you do makes a difference." It didn't say, "don't do anything until you're perfect." Or "you better not try anything until you're really good at it!" What I grasped from that idea was that I can just be the best version of myself, whatever version that is at any time, and that's enough. I don't know why that didn't sink in decades earlier, but, that's OK...I have it now! And it makes all the difference in how I approach and treat my photography clients. Instead of fearing that I will make a mistake, I have the attitude of just giving the BEST customer service I can and treating them with care and I forget about my Imposter Syndrome. And, what's even more heartwarming and gratifying is how my clients thank for me for all I do for them throughout their experience, and how they love their final images. I would never hear their compliments, nor would they ever receive amazing their new business portraits, if I'd let the doubt and fear stop me from servicing them.

Hey everyone! You may know me as a portrait photographer, but I'm really a problem solver at heart.

As a portrait photographer, I've had clients who have come to me and know EXACTLY how they want their portraits to be done...but, that's really only about 10% of my clients. For the most part, about 90% of my clients just know they really need an updated portrait but are unsure and uncomfortable with expressing what or how they want to be photographed. And, I understand that...because that's not their talent! And that's when my "problem solver" cape comes out and when my work and customer service is driven by first getting to know each client during an initial relaxed conversation. For the client, they feel it's a just nice relaxed conversation as I ask them about their business, their family, their passions, and their favorite things to do and a nice way to break the ice. But, for me, it's an important part of the service as I'm watching and taking note of their authentic facial expressions so, when they're in the studio, I can make sure I capture an authentic expression and not a "forced/fake" smile. And, after they see their images, it's very common for me to have them say, "wow...I look so relaxed and that really looks like me! It's exactly what I wanted!"

Something I heard today >>> Be stubborn about your goals but flexible about your method of getting there!

We've all been told that goals are non-negotiable! But it's rare that you also hear that the methods with which you reach them ARE flexible. It's reaching them that really counts. If all I did all day was to stare at my goal planner, that won't make them be manifested...and, trust me I’ve tried! Well...not on purpose, but I have had my moments where I'm so overwhelmed that I am just staring at my LONG "to-do" and goals list! So, depending on the day...and how much rest I've had....I find that it makes a difference in the long run to convince myself to do just one thing...just complete just ONE thing....and that seems to get more actions rolling!

Why invest in high-quality photos? Hey everyone! I wanted to talk about the value of investing in high-quality portrait headshots. I'm sure you've heard of "a perceived value". To me, that's what I feel about someone's headshot within the first 5 seconds. I either immediately recognize that this business owner made it a priority to convey professionalism from the first impression, or I'd have to ask myself, "how much does this business owner really value their business?" It's a subtle thing that we all do so fast...make an intial judgement within the first 5 seconds of seeing someone's image....and it has a lasting impact on those who don't give out second chances.

As a business headshots photographer, I see firsthand how much of a difference a professional, well-crafted images can make for my clients. I'd like to share...I fell in love with photography at the age of 7 when my father gave me a Kodak Brownie camera (who remembers those?). I was just so fascinated that I could capture an image and then I could go to the store and get an envelope of those little 3" x 3" prints and be able to remember a moment that had taken place a few weeks earlier. I still have a few of them pasted into my old photo album! The idea that I could capture a moment, or a person, or view and save it for later totally resonated with me.

But, photography never really took hold because I was more passionate about singing. It wasn't until I moved to New York City in 1986 to pursue my love and passion for singing...only to find out how challenging it is to be a performer in New York...that I found photography again because I had to take a job at Conde Nast Publications to pay my bills and worked for the Editorial Director over all of their magazines. The well-known (and want-to-be) photographers at the time would bring in their portfolios (remember those?!) filled with their tear sheets and I would look through them and be absolutely blown away with the beauty of the images....and my love of photography and portraits was reignited. I felt compelled to learn how the photographers could capture someone's face so "just right" that they could balance a feeling of fine art, personality, and realness that I felt I could just start a conversation with that image. This experience still shapes my view and style of portraits today while I keep continuing to learn all I can to better my skills every day.

Photography is my passion and allows me to capture special people and their stories, and create meaningful, beautiful images. I approach my craft with a focus on capturing an emotion and telling the story of the person in the portrait where you feel you "know" them without every having met them.
