In June and July we lost 3 of 4 SSP captive red wolves released into the NC population and 2 older wild red wolves. All appear to be due to vehicular strikes, except one.
From FWS.GOV:
In April 2021, four adult SSP red wolves (two males and two females) arrived in the North Carolina to be released into the non-essential population area.
On June 3, 2021, the female red wolf from the acclimation pen on Pocosin Lakes NWR was found dead on the edge of a rural road within the NC NEP. Initial evidence at the mortality site was indicative of a vehicle strike.
On June 27, 2021, the male red wolf released from the acclimation pen on Alligator River NWR was found dead, and on June 30, 2021, the female red wolf released from the acclimation pen on Alligator River NWR was found dead.
Again, evidence at both scenes was suggestive of a vehicle strike.
In summary, three of the four captive red wolves released from the SSP under the Service’s Amended Plan to Release Red Wolves into the North Carolina Non-essential Experimental Population have died. One male red wolf from these releases remains on the landscape.
On July 6, 2021, during a routine monitoring flight, wild red wolf 2186, a 5-year old male, was detected in “mortality mode” (GPS collar emits signal indicating no movement in 8 hours) just north of Lake Mattamuskeet in a field on privately owned lands. A ground-based search crew was able to locate the carcass. This animal was heavily scavenged therefore a COD may not be possible.
On July 7, 2021, the Service was notified of an orange-collared canid, dead by the side of the road. Follow-up confirmed this to be red wolf 2044, an 8-year old male born in the wild that was translocated from Alligator River NWR to Pocosin Lakes NWR a few years ago.
Necropsy results are pending at this time for all of the above deaths.

Online Group Lightroom Class with me the weekend of November 21 and 22, 2020!
We will meet 11:00 am to approx 5 pm, Saturday and Sunday. I’m super excited. ☺️✨
This two-day online class focuses on the LIBRARY+ DEVELOP MODULES OF LIGHTROOM CLASSIC CC
It is aimed primarily towards people who have a good understanding of how to use their camera but those who are beginners in Lightroom CC or those who need extra help with what to do with photographs after they are taken and digital organization.
We will focus on the LIBRARY MODULE on Saturday and begin the Develop module on Saturday late afternoon and continue on with it Sunday.
What will be covered -

- Workflow from importing photos, culling, folder organization, keywords, collections, exporting

- Organization on your hard drives and best practices for back ups

- RAW files vs jpg

- Preparing images for print or web

- How to make your own presets for editing and importing and exporting, helping to make your post processing more efficient

- All the tools in the Develop module

- Universal and localized adjustments in Develop module

- Tips and techniques for color, black and white, and split-tone image editing
Image correction (exposure, white balance, color etc)

- Tips for using more advanced techniques with the adjustment brush

- Panoramas

- Cropping

- Developing your own style
This is a LIVE online workshop via ZOOM.
You will have the opportunity to ask questions and there will be scheduled group discussion time outside of the demo portions.

New online workshop for photographers October 24-25!

Slow photography is a new way of approaching image creation and capture. In this class you will experience how to access your internal stillness. You will become more receptive to visual stimulus and naturally begin shooting from a more grounded, centered place.

Together with a small group of like-minded individuals, you will be guided through creative, contemplative explorations helping you develop a new innovative skillset and solidify your own personal style.

You will learn to approach your subjects with intention and create interesting and unique photographs that utilize light, color, technique, and inexpensive (and even DIY) equipment.

Cheetah and African Daisies. The second in my series of sketches (as I learn to paint) of threatened, endangered and extinct wildlife.
Widely known as the planet’s fastest land animal, the Cheetah is listed as Threatened. Today, there are estimated to be only ~ 6674 cheetahs left in the wild – and their future remains uncertain, as their numbers are decreasing..
Threats include loss of habitat and fragmentation due to livestock farming & ranching, roads & railroads, hunting & trapping, human intrusions & disturbance, war, civil unrest & military exercises, invasive and other problematic species, genes & diseases.

In Africa they are now known to persist in only 10% of their historic range (IUCN SSC 2007a, b, 2012, in prep.), while their distribution in Asia is limited to the central deserts of Iran. In Africa, Southern and Eastern Africa are the species strongholds, but there has been significant range loss across all regions.
For ways to help see-
is an internationally recognized center of excellence in the conservation of cheetahs and their ecosystems. CCF works with stakeholders to develop best practices in research, education, and land use to benefit all species, including people.
