Every year my husband and I go to Martha's Vineyard. We learned early on, to go in September. One of our dogs has been on almost every trip. His name is Murphy and he is turning 15 in November. This week's theme is so dear to me. Last year while photographing seascapes, my husband and Murphy were down the beach walking and running on the beach. Stan, my husband was laughing and smiling like a boy with his dog! I didn't capture it and I regretted it the entire way home from vacation. In October and November, I kept saying I was so sorry I didn't capture that moment. Murphy was turning 14 last November and what were the odds that he would join us another year on vacation? The second week of January, Murphy needed emergency surgery. It was either a gall bladder ready to explode or cancer. He is diabetic and on insulin injections twice a day. He has Cushing's, and he has had pancreatitis. So the surgery was risky but my vet felt very confident. Murphy came through the surgery like a champ. No cancer but a very huge gall bladder. Now the count down to September. Would I get this photo I wanted so badly? A week before our trip they started talking about a new hurricane. A hurricane named Lee. We went up to Martha's Vineyard on September 9th with the hope of one nice sunset. All I wanted was this one image, of Murphy and Stan on the beach in Aquinnah. We had one nice evening and the sky was strange and rich with the hurricane heading towards us. We had to cut the trip short to get home and were very fortunate to get off the island on Thursday. The ferry was completely booked out and our return reservation was for Saturday (today). The worst day of the storm. Our rental is on a dirt road in the woods and in a section of the island that loses power. Sadly we left our trip early but got home safely. My husband is not that great in front of the camera, but I got the shot of them. I can only hope that Murphy will return to the beach next year before his 16th birthday. Here is the one I felt captured the moment.

I can't wait to be back on the island in a few weeks. Visiting Martha's Vineyard after the Labor Day crowds have left can offer a different and often more serene experience compared to the peak summer season. One of the most noticeable differences is the tranquility. With the majority of summer tourists gone, the island tends to be much quieter and less crowded. You can enjoy a more relaxed and peaceful environment, making it a great time for a restful getaway. The beaches, which are typically bustling during the summer, become much quieter after Labor Day. You'll likely find more space to spread out, making it easier to find a prime spot for sunbathing, picnicking, or just enjoying the sound of the waves. Edgartown, sunrise. Empty streets. #

If you are visiting Martha's Vineyard right now and your kids went on the Shenandoah, a friend is offering a beautiful matted 5x7 if they can answer his pop quiz.

I have had a tradition over the years of offering a free 5x7 print to kids who ventured out on Shenandoah if they could come to the gallery and name 3 parts of the mast! It took off, and I have met many of the kids from the 5th grade classes on the island. The trip was life-changing for many.

This summer I have been so busy, it wasn't until last night I was able to take a picture. Not sure who was on board but I am offering the same matted 5x7 print to the families that want this photo. No strings attached. I just enjoy doing it. "Alabama" sailed by to say hello!

Have a great weekend.

One of the most interesting things about Martha's Vineyard as an artist is how much the coastline changes from year to year. When you think about your favorite beach, your memory of that beach is from a certain time frame. If you are looking for a piece that was created in a certain year, please let me know. I might have something from that year. Edgartown Lighthouse at Sunset May 2017. These colors lend themselves to fall decor. In just a few shorts weeks I will FINALLY be visiting my favorite place Martha's Vineyard! There is something fascinating to me about the ferry. Arriving on the island I refer to it as the "Happy Boat". When on the island from time to time you hear the fog horn blow from a distant ferry. It makes me sad. It's like sand in an hourglass falling through the delicate glass to the end of my trip. As I board the ferry, I grasp at that last bit of my trip by photographing the ferry, the water the harbor. I know once I embark onto Woods Hole, my trip has ended until next time. If a piece of art of the "Happy Boat" is something that you would like for your home, please visit my gallery of the Martha's Vineyard Ferry. https://www.judyreinford.com/marthasvineyardferry
