Every year my husband and I go to Martha's Vineyard. We learned early on, to go in September. One of our dogs has been on almost every trip. His name is Murphy and he is turning 15 in November. This week's theme is so dear to me. Last year while photographing seascapes, my husband and Murphy were down the beach walking and running on the beach. Stan, my husband was laughing and smiling like a boy with his dog! I didn't capture it and I regretted it the entire way home from vacation. In October and November, I kept saying I was so sorry I didn't capture that moment. Murphy was turning 14 last November and what were the odds that he would join us another year on vacation? The second week of January, Murphy needed emergency surgery. It was either a gall bladder ready to explode or cancer. He is diabetic and on insulin injections twice a day. He has Cushing's, and he has had pancreatitis. So the surgery was risky but my vet felt very confident. Murphy came through the surgery like a champ. No cancer but a very huge gall bladder. Now the count down to September. Would I get this photo I wanted so badly? A week before our trip they started talking about a new hurricane. A hurricane named Lee. We went up to Martha's Vineyard on September 9th with the hope of one nice sunset. All I wanted was this one image, of Murphy and Stan on the beach in Aquinnah. We had one nice evening and the sky was strange and rich with the hurricane heading towards us. We had to cut the trip short to get home and were very fortunate to get off the island on Thursday. The ferry was completely booked out and our return reservation was for Saturday (today). The worst day of the storm. Our rental is on a dirt road in the woods and in a section of the island that loses power. Sadly we left our trip early but got home safely. My husband is not that great in front of the camera, but I got the shot of them. I can only hope that Murphy will return to the beach next year before his 16th birthday. Here is the one I felt captured the moment.
