Diablo Lake gets its color from glacial silt, and at sunset it turns almost too vivid to believe.

Diablo Lake in the North Cascades has one of the most striking colors I've ever photographed, a deep turquoise that comes from glacial flour, fine rock dust ground up by the glaciers above and carried down into the water. At sunset, that color goes up against the warm light on the peaks and the whole scene barely looks real. This is one of my favorite images from traveling out to the Pacific Northwest, and it still stops me every time I look at it. Available now as a fine art print.

Haystack Rock stands 235 feet tall, right in the surf. Sunset does the rest of the work.

Cannon Beach on the Oregon coast is home to Haystack Rock, a sea stack that rises well over 200 feet straight out of the sand and surf. I caught this one right at sunset, with the sky doing everything a Pacific coast sunset is supposed to do. It's a real change of pace from the Maine coast I usually shoot, rockier in a different way, and the tides and light behave differently out there too. This remains one of my most requested West Coast prints. Available now as a fine art print.

McGown Peak reflected almost perfectly in Stanley Lake, one still morning in the Sawtooths.

Stanley Lake sits at the base of the Sawtooth Mountains in central Idaho, and on a still morning McGown Peak reflects almost perfectly in the water. It's one of the more remote spots I've photographed, hours from the nearest town, and mornings like this one make the drive worth it every time. This remains one of my favorite images from out west.

West Quoddy Head Lighthouse in Lubec sits at the easternmost point of the continental United States, the first spot in the country to see the sunrise each day. Late summer brings a field of tall white asters up around the point, and I wanted an image that put those flowers front and center instead of just another shot of the candy-striped tower. It's become one of my more requested prints from Down East Maine. Available in sizes up to 40"x60" on a variety or media.

Sometimes the best photo is the one where nothing at all is happening.

In Middle Bay near Lookout Point in Harpswell, a small skiff sits anchored just off a tiny island as the evening settles in. There's no drama in this one, no storm, no big sky full of color, just calm water and a boat waiting for its owner to come back. I keep coming back to this image because it captures something a lot of my more dramatic shots don't, the quiet, unhurried pace of life on the Maine coast. Available now as a fine art print.

Bernard is a quiet fishing village on the western side, or "quiet side" of Mount Desert Island, well off the tourist path that most people take through Acadia. This image is about as understated as my work gets, just a small dory floating near a pier stacked with lobster traps, no dramatic light or big sky. But it's one of the pieces collectors keep coming back to, maybe because it feels less like a postcard and more like an honest look at how the harbor actually works day to day.

This image was juried into the 2019 Maine Photography Show; my first image ever to make the show.

As a hurricane churned away out to sea on this day back in 2019, I headed to Portland Head Light in search of big waves. Getting this shot meant climbing down to the cobblestone beach next to the lighthouse, right at the edge of a tide pool that had formed on a large rock formation. Then I timed the shutter between waves so Portland Head Light would show up reflected in the water just as the next crash of surf rolled through. It's a riskier way to shoot a lighthouse everyone already knows well, salt spray on the lens, wet feet, timing that has to be right. But it's exactly that risk that makes this one stand out from the hundreds of other Portland Head images out there, and it's remained one of my most popular prints since I took it.

Jordan Pond
Acadia National Park

Jordan Pond at dusk, with the Bubbles standing at the far end and the whole sky lit up in indigo and gold. I've since photographed this spot more times than I can count, but this was my first time, and it all came together, still water, no wind, and a sky that just kept getting better the longer I waited. It's become one of the most popular images in my whole catalog, and every time I look at it I remember the way my kids hung out with me while I waited for the light. At one point my 12 year old daughter bent down to see what I was doing, resting her chin on my head. Somewhere I have a photo of that. It's one of my favorite memories.

Perseid Over Marshall Point

With the Perseid meteor shower building toward its peak on August 12th and 13th, I keep coming back to this shot in 2023 at Marshall Point Lighthouse in Port Clyde. Marshall Point is already one of my favorite places to shoot night sky work, the lighthouse sits right out on the point with almost nothing blocking the horizon. On this particular night the Perseids were putting on a real show. If you're thinking about getting out to see this year's meteor shower, Marshall Point is worth the drive.

"Fury at the Harbor Gates:
Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, South Portland, Maine
This one gets revisited in my collection more than almost any other storm image I've shot. Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse sits right at the mouth of Portland Harbor, and on this particular December day a nor'easter was pounding the coast hard enough that the light was nearly swallowed by the surf. I've photographed a lot of Maine lighthouses in calm conditions, but there's something about seeing one hold its ground against real weather that people connect with. Still one of my most collected pieces.
