Now welcoming, the interesting Green Heron!

When I saw this guy, I was SO intrigued! I had never seen one before (they don't live in Montana). This one was sneaking so slyly through the bushes that I almost didn't notice it. It had its neck tucked in close, then hopped onto the branch here, slowly stretched out its neck, and took off into the sky.

The Green Heron is one of the smallest resident members of the heron family. The have dark greenish-gray bodies and deep reddish-brown necks and faces, with dark greenish feather tufts on top of their heads. Adult birds have bright yellow legs, which turn more orange during the breeding season.

They can be found in forested wetlands and marshy areas with dense vegetation. Fish are their primary food, but they will feed on crayfish, frogs, snakes, and insects. They will perch above the water and wait for a fish to swim by within reach and then sn**ch it out of the water.

American Crow 🐦‍⬛

Thought to be among our most intelligent birds.

The American Crow inhabits a wide variety of semi-open habitats, ranging from farmland and open fields to clearings in the woods. They are often fond on shores, especially in the Pacific Northwest. They avoid hot desert zones.

It is entirely black with a strong bill and a relatively short, square-tipped tail.

They mostly feed on the ground, sometimes in trees. They feed on almost anything they can find, including spiders, snails, earthworms, frogs, insects, small snakes, shellfish, garbage, eggs, carrion, the young of other birds, seeds, grain, berries, and fruit. (My husband fed this one part of a cookie😊🥰)

Mated pairs perch close together, touching bills and preening each other's feathers.

A breeding pair may be assisted by "helpers," which are their offspring from previous seasons.

North American Red Squirrel

These little critters can be found throughout the United States in the forests of Alaska, the east coast north of Georgia, and the Rocky Mountains. The squirrels prefer coniferous forests. 🌲

They mainly eat the seeds and cones of evergreen trees, however, they will also eat bird eggs, berries, and fruit when they are available.

The most noticeable characteristics are the tail and the eye ring. The eye ring is a thick, white circle around the rodent's black eyes. The tail is bushy and dark red with hints of a white outline.

The coloring can range from grayish, red, or rust-colored fur with a white belly. Sometimes a black stripe can be seen on the sides.

To communicate, it makes a lengthy, descending trill and a chatter of assorted notes and chucks.

Sometimes they forget to dig up their winter seed collection, therefore unintentionally planting trees in new places.

The Hudsonian Whimbrel - An elegant, brownish shorebird with a very long, curved bill. It occupies open habitats - tundra for nesting and mudflats, beaches, and saltmarshes the rest of the year.

They feed mostly on crabs and other marine invertebrates which they pull out of the mud or sand with their bills. They also eat insects and berries when available.

Some migrating Hudsonian Whimbrels make a non-stop flight of 2,500 miles from southern Canada or New England to South America!

Numenius, the genus assigned to the Hudsonian Whimbrel, means "new moon" in Greek, a reference to the birds bill shape, which resembles a crescent moon. 🌙

Araneus diadematus, AKA Cross Orbweaver, AKA European Garden Spider!

~ Females have lengths of 6.5 to 20mm and makes are 5.5 to 13mm.

~ Their colors range from pale yellow to nearly black!

~ Females breed once, dying shortly after laying their eggs. Individuals of this species breed at the end of the warm season, with the young hatching the following spring.

At my house we get to see a lot of these guys and cat-faced spiders! Every spring we can count on having a large swarm or 2 or 3 of babies hanging around! I look forward to it every year. 🕷🕸

Killdeer!

A few fun facts about these birds:

~ A Killdeer is a type of plover. More specifically, the "ringed plover" group. It is the largest member of this group in North America and can be distinguished by the two wide bands of black across its breast.

~ Killdeer are considered shorebirds and can be found around water, mudflats, lake shores, and coastal estuaries, but also favor a wide range of open areas like plowed fields, pastures, airports, and grass lawns.

~ The Killdeer performs the 'broken wing' act when something or someone gets a little too close to its nest, in which it flutters along the ground in a show of injury, luring the intruders away.
