My husband hired a model to pretend to be his wife at his high school reunion.
________
I married Ben 12 years ago. We were young, broke, and in loveāthen life happened: two kids, a mortgage, and a man who started measuring me in calories and clothes. After my second C-section, I didn't bounce back. He started saying stuff like, "YOU'LL GET BACK TO YOUR OLD SELF SOON, RIGHT?" or "YOU DON'T NEED NEW CLOTHES. YOU'RE TOO BIG FOR IT." Little digs that felt like rust.
When he talked about his 20-year high school reunion, he was obsessed with his image and what his former classmates would think about him.
"It's a WITHOUT spouses thing," he said, and I swallowed that sting. Then he bought a $900 Italian blazerā"a work thing"āwhile refusing to give money to fix our broken dishwasher.
Two nights before the reunion, I found an email he left open: Elite Companions Inc. Invoice: $600. "Event dateāSPOUSE ROLEālight affection acceptable." Attached: a photo of Chloeā27, blonde, perfect.
There was a message line that made my stomach freeze: "Introduce her as my wife⦠MY REAL ONE ISN'T IN HER BEST SHAPE. She really looks awful." He was ashamed of me. He paid a stranger to PRETEND to take my place.
I didn't scream. I didn't beg. I planned.
On the night, Ben entered in his new suit, arm-in-arm with Chloe, smiling for his old classmatesācompletely unaware that my next MOVE would humiliate him in a way he never saw coming.ā¬ļøFull story in 1st commentš
