The current let down of expected aurora displays that never materialized reminds me of the many trips that ended in disappointment trying to capture the northern lights over Split Rock Lighthouse. The aurora do not always show up when expected. It takes many different factors coming together, but when they do, the results can be spectacular. A full moon provided enough light to bring out the details in the landscape in this display from 2012.

Nine years ago today was the best sunrise at Split Rock Lighthouse. I need to get back up there. It has been too long.
