Hi everyone,
As some of you know I am currently taking a class called Social and Cultural diversity, which will go towards my degree in school counseling. We have been asked to do a project that will immerse us into a culture, however it’s really a wide-open project. The idea is for us to do something that makes us uncomfortable. I’m interested in incorporating my love for photography into this project. I am looking for people who would be willing to expose themselves and share their story.
My project idea is to create maybe a website (limited access) that host photographs and stories of people in the community who have what we would call a social stigma, such as mental illness, physical disabilities, skin color etc. I’m looking for people who would be willing to either send me a photograph, or I can photograph you, and send me their story on how having this “social stigma” has impacted their life. Again, the idea is to show people that these stigmas are more part of the norm, because they can impact people that you know every day.
Please send me a personal message if you are interested in helping me with this project. Again, it’s putting yourself out there, but I think that it will be awesome if it works out the way that I want it to!
Examples of stigmas:
Mental illness, physical disabilities, diseases, sexual orientation, race, religion, substance abuse, Physical abuse, miscarriage, eating disorders, obesity. The list could go on.
