Forest Voices... Imagine a family of Ents standing beside the cool waters of the East Branch Penobscot River in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument... I had no idea what they were saying, yet I felt these tears coming to my eyes as I remembered my Dad from a long time ago. The heart knows what the mind can be blind to. Rainbow Stream in remote Piscataquis County, Maine is a natural nature photography treasure for those who wish to explore and discover the wonders of the natural world...From a place-based photographic perspective, this water flow tumbling through the forest is a challenge to capture, given the ever changing light and shadow conditions that mark Rainbow Stream. Climbing steep, remote Mount Coe in Baxter State Park on October 4, 2023 was particularly heartfelt as my son David was with me all the way, encouraging me upwards to this spacious view across the Klondike to Katahdin, with Brothers on the left.

My approach to natural nature photography is not particularly artsy when you consider the sweat on thy brow with every step up a trail to a unique viewshed. Nevertheless, I continue to seek these special moments in nature, where time disappears and space opens up deep and wide, inside/out.

Last night on the urban edge of Bangor, Maine the owls were calling out to us from the pine woods behind our house. Such delight and serenity be their voices and friendly song.

I admit my simplistic associations do stretch quite the distance, up to the heights of The Owl in behind Katahdin in Baxter State Park, Maine. The summit of The Owl provides a unique nature art photography moment for those who dare to ascend its open heights.

The depth and extent of Katahdin topography and ecology opens up at the very end of The Owls summit trail. More of my naturalist nature photography can be seen at natureartplace.com

Nature Art Photography is best known for its awe and beauty. On the other hand, comparative nature photographs can reveal a disturbing picture of changes over time in the natural world that we all are a part of.

This collection of landscape photographs was taken from No.5 Mt. near Jackman, Maine. They reveal atmospheric change in recent times. The clear, early fall photo in 2018, is followed below by the same scene in early-winter 2021. The third, very same landscape was taken on October 2, 2023 (upper-right).

The smoke from Canadian wildfires is evident in these comparative landscape and fire tower photos. The very last landscape looks across Maine’s Boundary Mountains to the Quebec border. The depth of smoke impacts Maine’s woodlands in many ways; on wildlife, on trees and forests, and on our own human well-being.

To get closer to this, simply breathe in and out deeply; inhale the life-sustaining oxygen produced by trees in the forest, and breathe with the knowledge that CO2 laden wildfire smoke is also going into your lungs, along with the oxygen.

Every picture and breath tells a story, don’t it? CLICK ON the large, single image view to see the depth of wildfire smoke on the Maine Woods...

Tunk Mountain, Southern Viewshed, Franklin, Maine...

Granite ledges define the open character of Tunk Mountain, providing views south to Schoodic Peninsula and the Gulf of Maine. After a short tussle up and over the bedrock brow, Tunk offers expansive scenery from overlooks on both the north and south sides of the summit ridge. Thanks to Maine Bureau of Public Lands for taking care of this special place in Hancock County.

Bull Moose, Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument, Maine....

Luck of the draw! Three days after spotting this moose on an old logging road, I returned early in the morning and there he was, Bullwinkle, feeding on vegetation and berries growing along the shoulder of the road. I moved in close, slowly and carefully, one light step at a time. Upon leaving, I thanked the moose for letting my into his realm in nature.

After a long spell of not encountering moose on my travels in the Maine Woods, I met this magnificent bull moose feeding on berries and grasses along a logging road in Katahdin Woods and Water National Monument. What a gift to be quiet and paying attention to this woodlands creature....RM .
