Sunday morning before sunrise, I saw the loons were clear across the lake swimming and diving together. Its that time of year when they start rafting together. They gather together preparing for the fall migration. From where I stood on the small beach it looked like an oil painting.

We were out on the water this weekend and I laid on the front of the pontoon boat to try and get the damsel flies hovering around the stick in the middle of the lake as we passed by it.

I spent Saturday at Highland Lake with my folks. We sat and watched this little family swim around the water's edge.

A couple weeks ago, we went for a our first quick paddle of the season. It was in the middle of the day, but around every corner there seemed to be a loon up ahead fishing on the pond.

I stood and watched these two for a bit. I thought they were billing by rubbing their beaks together, but then it looked like they were having a small scuffle. The wider a puffin opens its beak the more upset they are. Whatever, it was they stood around together long after the other puffins had left.

After dinner on Lonna Island, we spotted a couple Gull chicks starting to bed down for the night.

The Common Merganser has a long bill with serrated edges for eating small fish and mollusks.

I spent a morning birding out at Helsinki's Harakka Nature Centre on Harakka Island. Just as I was packing up to leave on the ferry, I spotted this Common Merganser with her babies from the floating dock.
