Nature Photography is more than learning how to use a camera. It is learning how to follow light. It teaches patience, respect, and observation. It requires focus, both outward and inward.
I was shooting birds one afternoon when upriver I spotted an egret, and something splashing in a small pool. I extended my zoom as far as I could, then added my doubler and extended again.
This image was captured at the very edge of my focal range, a distance about the length of a football field. I watched this egret and river otter hunt together for almost an hour. The companionship and cooperation was one of the most beautiful things I’ve witnessed in in my life. This is my favorite click from those magical moments because the egret is swallowing, and the otter is giving undivided attention. It is as if they’ve have been having a wonderful conversation about all the things they have seen.

Enter the wild with care, my love,
and speak the things you see
Let new names take and root
and thrive and grow
And even as you travel far
from heather, crag and river
May you like the little fisher,
set the stream alight with glitter
May you enter now as otter
without falter into water
