Had the extraordinary honor of telling this beautiful family's story through my camera lens and supporting them as a student midwife. Their Beanie was born into the most loving arms ❤️ Click over and read more from Moonstone Midwifery about their journey.

When most people think of midwifery, they think of the babies. They think of those first sweet, undisturbed moments of motherhood. They think of the birth tub and the twinkle lights and the joy. Those "I did it!" moments get all the fame.

The truth is that being a midwife is so much more than supporting families as they meet their healthy, term newborn babies. Walking with someone through pregnancy also involves triaging those phone calls filled with uncertainty. To be a midwife means to provide reassurance and hope when possible, and realistic preparation when needed. Your midwife is there with you to cheer you on and celebrate your wins, and even more importantly, to hold space and grieve your losses alongside you.

Pregnancy loss is a very real part of midwifery care and an experience that most of my clients have had at some point during their childbearing journey. Not all of the babies that I care for in my practice are born at home. Not every first heartbeat that we hear brings the same reassuring gallop to our next visit. Although some of these babies may enter this world far too early, I know that every single one of them were loved deeply by their parents.

Each individual pregnancy brings its own untold story, unfolding as we work together to honor the time that you meet your beloved baby. I truly wish that those moments were exclusively filled with joy. Unfortunately, growing new life is complicated and mysterious, beyond any midwife or parent's ability to predict or control.

Although this wasn't the labor and birth that we would have hoped for, I was so grateful that I had the chance to support this family as they met their little Beanie. Born just a few weeks too early, he was perfect in every other way. Despite the sadness that filled the room, the special joy of finally meeting this little one was preserved in our hearts. This photo by captures a mother and father, filled with pride, saying hello and goodbye for the first and last time.

So much love to this family. Thank you for sharing this intimate moment, bringing awareness to late-term miscarriage and stillbirth. Holding you as you mourn a due date passed with empty arms.

First blog post in many, many moons. Please give it a read…

“After a few minutes of small talk, we all sat down as a group to watch a documentary titled, Trial of Labor. Within the first few minutes I knew I was in for a doozy of an evening. The film follows several women on their journey through a trial of labor after a cesarean; it shows how extraordinarily difficult it is for women to find a supportive provider, and also the mental and emotional rollercoaster that some women experience after an unexpected cesarean delivery. It was difficult for many women in the room, including myself; tissues were passed and gentle hands reached out in support. If there is one place you want to be when you’re feeling vulnerable, heavy emotions - it is in a room with birth workers.”

Hi friends. For the first time in a long time, I've taken some time to jot some thoughts down on my blog. It's an important one, to me and to our community. I hope you'll take a few minutes to read and share it. Happy Friday 🧡

Hi. It’s me, jess. It has been an inordinate amount of time since I’ve laid eyes on this platform and sat down to write out some thoughts. Growing up, I journaled nearly everyday, and while I know how important and helpful it is for someone like me - it’s so hard to find the time. Lately thoug...

After taking some much needed time off with my own family, I am excited to jump back into a brand new year of supporting your beautiful families as you welcome your newest babes!

It's been a joy to work with during her first year as a student here at Moonstone. She has offered so much to our clients, from her motherly wisdom to her loving spirit. She has also captured some amazing moments through her camera lens! Over the next week, I will be sharing some of the births that wrapped up 2022.

This particular photo comes from a dear client who reached out to both Jess and I separately, not knowing that we worked together. Cosmic circumstances, a challenging end of pregnancy, a slow start to labor, and then suddenly fast and furious birth! The faces of both parents in these photos speak more than any words I can write. Check the stories for more!

As we enter the new year, Jess will be stepping deeper into her midwifery role. During this transition, we would love to expand our recommendations to other birth photographers in the Baltimore area. Please let us know if you're taking clients in 2023.
