For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved autumn (at least once I was old enough for it to no longer be synonymous with the start of the school year). The combination of the leaves changing and the fleeting nature of it seemed to lend itself perfectly to a time for introspection; for contemplation. Coupled with the fact that I was an avid hiker when I had the time, it meant cooler temps, less humidity (curse these east coast summers), and no mosquitoes. Perfect conditions for backpacking. In recent years, however, it’s become a stark reminder of something far more serious: climate change. 😕
There are obviously many, far more scientific, signs that climate change is a serious issue, but anybody who has paid attention to the conditions up and down the northeastern US over the last 10 years should be well aware that the autumn season has become increasingly erratic. And more serious still is the reminder that so many people still don’t get it. 🤔
I normally avoid discussing politics on public forums, if for no other reason than the fact that I am already fully aware of the depths to which idiocy will plunge. I need no reminder of that. But after watching the final debate last night, I do feel compelled to point out the one question that nobody seems to demand of these candidates: Do you actually think the planet cares about us? Every time they talk about climate change and how to deal with it, it’s always jobs, jobs, jobs. News flash: The climate cares about jobs about as much as a virus cares about your freedom to not wear a mask. How did we become so narcissistic that we think our monetary wealth is the most important component of this discussion? 🤬
We’ve steadily created a more and more synthetic existence over the last few hundred years and now it seems we’ve crawled so far inside it that we’ve forgotten what the natural world is and how it works. The natural world will react to what we pump into it. It will not care about the reason we pumped something into it. And no amount of wishful thinking will change that. There is no other issue on the ballot because none of the other issues will matter if we’re extinct. The time is now. accordingly
