The Japanese architect Toyo Ito once said, "We have to base architecture on the environment."

I try to emphasize each property's uniqueness when I photograph it; its relationship to its surroundings, its welcoming allure to the eye and the heart and the comfort it can provide in each of our beautiful seasons. A home is more than walls and mortar. it's a refuge to rest and contemplate each new step in life.

1912 was a very busy year for Cooperstown historians. Legendary pitcher Cy Young retired from baseball with 511-315 win-loss record. Ty Cobb was suspended for beating up a heckler and Philadelphia second baseman Eddie Collins stole the MLB record of 6 bases in the Athletics' 9-7 win over Detroit Tigers at Navin Field. American athlete Jim Thorpe won 4 of 5 events to win the Pentathlon and Decathlon gold medals at the Stockholm Olympics only to have his medals stripped the following year for playing semi-pro baseball. His medals were reinstated in 1982. And, also in 1912 and a few miles north of the Hall of Fame, halfway up Otsego Lake, another piece of Leatherstocking history was established; the Cobblescote Inn. This past week, I visited the Cobblescote to produce updated photographs of the Inn. I shoot several vacation rentals each year, but, less frequently, former inns or resorts. And very few of those have held on to the charm and ambiance of their glory days. The Cobblescote is one of those gems.

I enjoy photographing real estate. But, I get excited when a project repurposes historic architecture from generations ago and creates an environment for multiple generations to enjoy and share history. The old Virgil school is now the Virgil Community Living Center. The center combines senior living and offers a facility for area residents to to enjoy community activities in a safe rural environment.
