Coach of the Year — Austin American‑Statesman:
In his fourth year leading the program, head baseball coach Ryan Rogers guided the Lake Travis Cavaliers all the way to the Class 6A state title game, where the Cavaliers came up short against a strong Keller squad. But he never let the final score define the journey. Under his leadership, the Cavs pushed through one of the toughest schedules in the state, reclaimed the district title, and stacked 32 wins with the kind of grit, discipline, and day‑to‑day consistency that now sets the standard for Lake Travis baseball.

The Westlake Chaparrals girls basketball team, led by head coach Vickie Benson, has extended its undefeated streak to 32–0 overall and 9–0 in District 26‑6A. With just three regular‑season games remaining, the final stretch features familiar opponents — the same trio Westlake beat decisively earlier in district play, averaging a 37‑point margin of victory. While nothing is set in stone, the stats point to a team confidently steering its own destiny as the postseason nears.

Action photos from the night capture the intensity of Westlake Chaparrals road win against the Bowie Bulldogs came with all the grit and defensive bite expected from a team chasing the top of the district table. The Chaparrals edged out Bowie for a 50–47 victory on Friday night at Bowie High School in Austin, TX, improving to 7–1 in District 26‑6A and staying one game behind undefeated Lake Travis Cavalier 8-0 heading into their high‑stakes Feb. 3 rivalry clash. Westlake has now held Bowie to its two lowest scoring outputs of the season — 47 in Friday’s matchup and 46 in their Jan. 6 meeting for the 57–46 Chaparral win. I reimagined a portrait of Drew Brees—photographed during a fleeting sideline moment beneath the Friday Night Lights at Chaparral Stadium. A timeless tribute to the former Chap football player who became a legend, returning home where it all began.

While out on my afternoon walks, I had been spying a neighbor’s mailbox crowned with a coiled snake skeleton, its bony grin aimed at a nearby witch frozen mid-cackle. I couldn’t resist—I returned with my camera to capture this eerie moment, and recreated the scene into a spine-tingling Halloween sight. Shadows, spells, and skeletal charm… all part of the neighborhood magic.

I reimagined the Red Spotted Purple butterfly in an oil brush painting, capturing its underside from a fresh perspective bathed in sunset hues. It’s amazing how photography can evolve into extraordinary canvas art—and I absolutely love the journey from lens to brushstroke. Learn more at https://johngutierrez.photography.com
