Nobody talks about how awkward starting photography actually is.
When you’re new, it’s not just about learning camera settings. It’s the lack of confidence, the weird posing, the cheap gear missing the shot, and having to ask people to do something again while internally dying. That stage is frustrating in a way most people never admit.
At the beginning, it can feel like you’re putting in work and getting nowhere. But that awkward stage is not a sign that you’re failing. It’s usually the part right before things start becoming real.
Over time, the small shoots turn into paid work, the paid work turns into better opportunities, and eventually the thing that once felt uncomfortable becomes part of your story. But for most photographers, the real shift doesn’t just come from getting better with a camera. It comes from learning the business and marketing side too. That’s when things start to click.
So if you’re in that awkward stage right now, stay in it. Everybody who made it had a version of that phase too.
Now tell me: What was the most awkward moment you had when you first started shooting?

A lot of photographers think shooting at f/1.8 with a high ISO is “good enough” for low-light events. But here’s what really happens: faces look flat, there’s no catchlight, and half the guests are out of focus.
Some avoid flash altogether. Others blast it straight on, or set up a harsh spotlight that kills the vibe of the moment.
But your clients don’t care about low light or technical excuses. They just want to look good, clean, and sharp.
Here’s what actually works: bounce flash for movement and speed, a strobe on a stand for formal shots, and shooting with ISO 100 and a deeper aperture so you deliver sharp images they’ll be proud to print.
Flash isn’t optional. It’s the difference between “it’s okay” and “wow.”

I’ve shot over 1,000 photoshoots in the last 12 years… and if I had to start from zero, these are the 3 light sofboxes I’d buy in 2026.

And no, your camera flash alone is not enough if you want professional results.

A large umbrella is perfect when you want soft, powerful light that fills the scene quickly. It’s great for events and gives that bold, professional look right away.

A lantern spreads light in every direction, which makes it perfect for outdoor nights or lighting up entire spaces. It creates a very natural and balanced feel.

And a medium softbox is my go-to. It works almost everywhere: weddings, products, indoor, outdoor, even video and gives consistent, soft light every time.

I don’t pick modifiers randomly. I choose them based on the look I want and the environment I’m in.

Is it okay to buy a cheap light stand? Absolutely no!
A lot of photographers think a $20 stand is good enough because nothing bad has happened yet. It holds the light, it looks stable, and everything seems fine.
Until the moment it isn’t.
I learned this the hard way. I once had a light set up outside on a cheap stand. A gust of wind came through, the stand tipped over, and the light shattered on the ground. What I thought was saving money on a stand ended up costing me way more in broken gear.
And honestly, the worst part isn’t even the money. Imagine if that light had fallen on someone.
That’s why now I invest in solid, heavy-duty stands. They lock tighter, feel sturdier, and protect the gear that actually makes me money.
Your light stand isn’t just holding your light.
It’s protecting your investment.

There are 3 levels of photographer, and most people never get past level one.
Level 1 photographers rely almost entirely on word of mouth.
They don’t have systems, everything happens through DMs and texts, and their online presence is inconsistent. Because of that, their growth is slow and unpredictable.
Level 2 photographers start to build organic visibility.
They have a real website, some reviews, active social media, and a booking process that works for most clients. This is where photography starts to feel like a real business.
Level 3 photographers treat photography like a scalable company.
They run ads, have optimized listings, consistent reviews across platforms, and systems that guide clients through a full funnel:ads, landing pages, CRM, and automated follow-ups.
The difference between these levels isn’t talent.
It’s systems.
Follow if you want to learn how to become a Level 3 photographer.

$200 videographer vs $2,000 videographer: The difference isn’t luck. It’s preparation and intention.
The beginner fixes shaky footage in editing. The pro gets it clean in-camera.The beginner shows up hoping nothing fails. The pro shows up prepared for everything to fail.
The beginner thinks audio just needs to be “good enough.”The pro knows audio is half the experience.
The beginner adjusts exposure however they can.The pro controls light with ND filters and protects the cinematic look.
The beginner leaves white balance on auto. The pro sets it intentionally because color defines mood.
The difference isn’t talent. It’s standards.
When you raise your standards, your results change, and so do your rates.
