it’s freezing in Austin, and reminding me of New Years Eve, when i woke up to the most beautiful blanket of frost covering the Davis Mountains.
got up early and drove up above the clouds to the .
looking like a big, frosty disco ball.

after near a year of being closed, Balmorhea is back open!
closed last May after damage to the foundation was discovered, undoubtably related to the encroaching fracking operations, one of the continents largest spring-fed pools has been repaired and reopened.
and just in time for a West Texas trip i have planned at the end of the month. ☀️💦
some facts:
the San Solomon Springs have been a source of fresh water for our ancestors, a true oasis in the desert, for more than 11,000 years.
Balmorhea State Park is the highest revenue-generating park of the Texas State Park system.
and yet it is all being put at rick by .
a sitting TPWD Commissioner, Kelsey Warren, is also the fu***ng CEO of Energy Transfer Partners, the builders of both the Dakota Access and Trans Pecos Pipelines.
there have been SEVENTY-FIVE 1.5+ earthquakes within a 30 mile radius of the park just in the first two months of 2019...

autumn up the natchez trace parkway.

i took the scenic route up north for thanksgiving last year.

fields of silver soybeans drying down, frosty bales along the parkway and to***co curing in black barns.

dry down is when a crop, typically grains, is left in the field to dry down to a specific moisture content, which is critical to its stable storage.

while you’d never need to paint a barn black here in texas, they do up here to soak up the sun and cure the to***co quicker.

the hay too must see a couple sunny days between being cut and baled.

all these methods developed tens of thousands of years ago.
have we really come that far?

the film industry has for generations been a boy's club.
i'm lucky to have almost the opposite experience here in austin, knowing so many powerful women that produce, direct, cam op, grip & gaf.
but the perversity of sexism still taints the system.

while at Dutch Safari Co. i also photographed this silly billy goat of a truck.

one of about 2,800 produced for the italian and spanish market, and likely the only one on the american continent, it's a Daihatsu Rocky chassis, BMW power plant, wrapped in italian designer Bertone embellishment.
