I love parking garages, rooftops, concrete, interesting architecture, downtown streets and locations that have a little grit to them.

But I don’t choose a location just because it photographs well. I scout based on the person I’m photographing. What do they like? What do they wear? What feels natural to them? What kind of setting is going to make the photos actually feel like them?

Sometimes that means a parking garage. Sometimes it’s a football field, downtown alley, golf course or somewhere completely unexpected.

The location is just part of the story.

My goal isn’t to capture what someone looks like. I’m trying to capture who they are.

Everyone thinks senior photos have to happen in the fall… but can we talk about January through March senior sessions?

Honestly, this is one of my favorite times of year to photograph seniors.

The light is beautiful.
It’s cooler outside.
Locations are less crowded.
You’re not sweating through your outfit
And in Texas, we can still get gorgeous color, greenery and that warm golden light without it feeling like it’s 147 degrees outside.

And if you’re graduating in May, January, February and March are NOT too late for senior photos. In fact, it can be the perfect time.

My senior calendar for this school year is already around 80% full ;-)

So if senior photos have been sitting somewhere on your “we need to do that” list, you still have time.

And yes… I will tell you exactly what to do with your hands.

One of my favorite things to do with a camera is simply walk with no agenda. No shot list. No perfect location. No plan.

Just walk and look.

A flower growing through a fence. Interesting light hitting a wall. A tiny patch of color. Leaves catching the sun. A reflection. Something ordinary that becomes completely different when you change your perspective.

Walk around it. Get low. Shoot through something. Get close. Back up. Look at what the light is doing.

Some of my favorite photographs happen when I'm not trying to create a specific photograph at all.

Photography isn't always about finding the perfect location. Sometimes it's about learning to see what's already there.

So if you're feeling stuck creatively, grab your camera and go for a walk. Don't give yourself an assignment other than finding something beautiful or interesting.

You might be surprised by how much you start noticing when you actually look.

And yes... I'm encouraging you to branch out.

Kelvin can be confusing because we’re talking about the Kelvin setting IN my camera, not simply the temperature of the light I’m photographing.

When I photograph a sunset, you’ll often see my camera set around 7000K or even higher.

Why?

Because increasing the Kelvin setting warms the photograph.

So if I have gorgeous golden light in front of me, I don’t necessarily want my camera trying to neutralize it. Sometimes I want to lean into it.

For example, photographing the exact same sunset:

3500K = much cooler / bluer
5000K = more neutral daylight
6000K = warmer
7000K+ = rich, golden warmth

That doesn’t mean 7000K is the “correct” setting for every sunset. It’s a creative decision based on the light in front of me and how I want the final image to feel.

And because I shoot RAW, I still have the flexibility to fine-tune my white balance later in Lightroom.

One of the biggest things I want photographers to understand:

Kelvin isn’t just about correcting color. You can use it intentionally to create the color and mood you want in-camera.

Would you photograph the sunset more neutral, or would you lean into the warmth?

Cheer Media Day!!

After we capture all the classic shots in their cheer uniforms, I love giving the girls a chance to change into something a little more casual and just have fun in front of the camera.

Because Media Day doesn’t have to be just about the uniform. It’s about capturing who they are in this season of their lives, the friendships, the personalities, the laughs, and all those little moments they’ll want to remember years from now.

I love getting to capture memories like these. ❤️
