You say “THERE I AM!!?” and you are reminded of all your favorite parts of yourself.

What does that photo look like? Feel like? No wrong answers.

ADHD takeover in real time, soft launching “squirrel thought” as a potential catchphrase, and reminding us creative business owners to keep asking WHY?

Why did you choose those words to rep your work?
Why do you edit your photos?
Why don’t you edit your photos?
Why do you hide your pricing?
Why do you show your pricing?

If the question feels like a judgement, it’s because you don’t believe in the answer. If you can’t answer it, someone else probably told you to do it that way and you never really thought about why.

This is a reminder to ask the question (over and over) to build the most aligned business practices possible for your sake, and your clients’. 😊

PS the catchphrase king in reference is 😂

A workshop review so heart-hugging, it gets its own carousel. 🖤🖤

“Saying yes to the Women as Art Workshop with Kara Marie meant flying to Milan (my first time ever in Europe, in a city I’d never been to, surrounded by a language I didn’t speak.) And somehow, that was exactly the point.

What I learned in that room went far beyond photography. I walked away with a new way of thinking about my work, my clients, and the business I’m building. It gave me the foundation to create something that feels sustainable, intentional, and deeply aligned with why I picked up a camera in the first place.

I believe photography has the power to transform the lives of the people I photograph. But this experience reminded me that it transforms mine, too.

Investing in myself changed the way I see what’s possible, not only as an artist, but as a business owner and as a woman who keeps choosing to bet on herself.

I’m so grateful I chose to have this experience with you, Kara. Thank you for creating such a beautiful space for us to learn, create, and grow together. And to every incredible woman I met from around the world, thank you for sharing your hearts and your artistry.

I left Milan with so much more than new photographs.

I left believing in myself a little more than I did when I arrived. 🤍”

Oh this darling woman. Her first class with me was PIVOT Sessions in NYC and I told her she was stuck with me after that. OR maybe she told me I was stuck with her. Either way, here we are on a journey together and I have all the warm and fuzzies over this woman’s presence, progress, and motivation. Thank you, Layra!

Women as Art is certainly one for the books. There’s one spot left for October 27th in Milan, should you feel called to join us. 🖤🖤🖤 Kara-Marie.com/womenasart

Hotel room self portrait challenge.

I like to push myself to shoot a few frames when I’m at a hotel — something outside of the obvious bed lying scenario. There’s usually not much space to work with and less than stellar lighting, but when there’s obstacles like that, I find myself liking the result better. Forced creative problem solving.

The first frame is one of my new favorites. I love the lighting— backlit softly by a small window behind me— enough for that eyelash detail to really show. The window in front of me gave some nice skin highlights and a few shiny pin points in my 5 day dirty hair that otherwise wasn’t showing any signs of life.

The black fabric I hung behind the window made for an interesting texture, and the mirrored reflection gave a double vision effect. Y’all know I love it when you have to squint a little. 😏

My rules are: never more than 3 minutes to set up, I can’t add to my existing look (ie: no added styling, no fixing hair/makeup), I can only subtract, no more than 10 minutes to shoot, and 10 minutes in post for the whole set. In this case it was 1 minute to set up, 4 minutes to shoot because my Chinese dumpling delivery was getting cold. Can’t have that.

6 minutes of self portraits, testing the distortion on my 16mm lens, balancing (at times) on my side table in my tiny Italian apartment, home alone for the first time in…??? In the final minute I got a phone call that notified me of yet another gut-punch of the bureaucratic variety (never ending). So enjoy that moment with me in the last frames. K bye.
