Maybe controversial, but I donāt charge cancellation fees. I also donāt charge late fees. I also donāt charge reschedule fees. And I offer unlimited reschedules.
When you hire me, youāre also hiring that you can trust that I care for you. S**t happens. Life gets in the way. Weāre fu***ng human and STRESSED being so. Bodies fail, emergencies happen, and sometimes we just wake up on the wrong side of the bed and donāt have the damn energy for it.
So when you hire me, you pay a deposit. That secures the original day we booked for it. If itās a wedding, and letās say something happens and you canāt pay the final bill, I will still show up and shoot your day. I wonāt deliver the photos till the final payment is in, but I will photograph it and hold onto them until you can so the memories are not missed. ļæ¼
Letās say we booked a simple fantasy portrait session. You put your deposit in, you made your last payment, everything SHOULD have been good to go- but the day comes around and you have a medical flareup. Or your kids started throwing up and now you have to take him to the doctor. Or your partner surprised you with a date because he forgot you had a shoot today. Or you woke up and youāre just not feeling yourself.
You can reschedule with me- without a fee. As long as itās available in my schedule, we can move it around.
Some photographers may ask me āwhat about losing money on those days? What about people who just continually miss payments?ā
And honestly, yes, I miss money on some of those days. It means I take on less clients so I have more wiggle room in my calendar for reschedules. It means I actually do make less money than I could.
But if I look at the grand scheme of things, maybe only 10% of clients actually need extensions on their payment or reschedules. The majority are able to pay things on time (hell most of them end up tipping me which is not even remotely require or expected) and we shoot without anything getting in the way. But I never want the clients who might have something pop-up, or a medical condition that gets in the way more often than not, to feel worried about booking with me.
My record for reschedules is 14. One client had 14 reasons to reschedule with me, but when we finally did her photos, she was crying because she finally felt beautiful and didnāt have to sacrifice her comfort, time with her very sick child, or wallet to do so. ļæ¼
My record for accepting late payments is six months. But the most meaningful one is when I photographed an end of life pet session 2 months ago. The final payment was not scheduled to be in for at least a month or more out, but time waits for no one in situations like this. So I suggested we do the shoot prior to the final payment being in just in case. We did the photo session, and less than two weeks later their pet passed from an aggressive form of cancer. If we had waited until their final payment was in, she would not have had photos of her dog. I accepted the final payment a few weeks after.
I donāt want this to seem like a standard that should be set, not every Photographer has the flexibility that I do both in their schedule and in their finances. But I DO have the flexibility and I want to be able to offer the best possible experience to my clients. ā¤ļø ultimately photography is a luxury, and for me that also comes with the luxury of time. And I will ALWAYS make time for my clients. You guys are the best ā¤ļøā¤ļøā¤ļø
