Some of my favorites stills from our commercial photo shoot with ! I got to take a Brane X home, and it’s seriously the best portable speaker on the market. I now use it as my TV sound system. Excited to be doing photography with this Austin tech company.

Photography is not about gear.
1) Light your subject with a window
2) Everything looks good at sunset
3) A piece of insulation from Home Depot is a great way to bounce light

Useless…for now. Here’s my review of Google Veo 3. 🤔

When Veo 3 was released, it was a huge advancement. 🚀

But after using the program to create hundreds of clips, here’s what Veo 3 is missing:

Continuity is a total headache. 😩

What’s going on with the subtitles?

It claims to be 1080p, but honestly, it feels more like 720p to me. 😒

It’s sluggish and very limited when it comes to fine-tuning details.

It’s okay if you’re just experimenting, or if you have a client who doesn’t mind a quirky end-product that you can’t refine.

However, generative AI remains experimental and uncertain.

And there are very few clients willing to invest in that. 💸

What can improv comedy teach a business owner? A lot! 🎭

When I was in college, I was part of an improv troupe called Freudian Slip. We used to perform to sold-out audiences every month. I learned 3 great business lessons from that experience.

#1 Advertising Must Be Memorable 🎤

You accomplish that through repetition or interruption. We used to get to campus at 6am and cover every messaging board with our posters. That’s repetition. Then we would jump on buses, run through the halls, and hit the quad passing out handbills, all while singing, dancing, and improvising comedy scenes. That’s interruption. And if you were on campus that week, you knew Freudian Slip had a show coming up.

#2 Yes, And… 🤝

There is a rule in improv to “never negate.” You should always be adding to the scene. This can be directly applied to relationships with clients. I want to take their ideas and augment them in ways that are even better than they imagined. A Core Value at Bennett is that we are creative problem solvers, not negators.

#3 Teamwork makes the dream work 🌟

With improv comedy, you’re a team. This means people can take big risks, like setting a scene on Mars or Will Smith’s family reunion, knowing that if they start to waver, a teammate will jump in and carry the torch forward. It’s the same with creative teams. During brainstorms, there needs to be freedom to take risks and trust in your team to carry the idea, even if you stall out.

What early jobs or hobbies inform your current career? Leave it in the comments.

Should freelancers ever work for free?
Hot take: Sometimes… but only if it’s strategic.

Here’s the rule I live by (and teach every creative I know): The 3 P’s

Every gig must check 2 of these 3 boxes:
1️⃣ Great PEOPLE
2️⃣ Good PAY
3️⃣ Strong PORTFOLIO work

If it checks all 3 boxes? That’s a dream project.

Only one? 🚩 Think twice.

Zero?? RUN.

Swipe through for the breakdown on when it’s actually OK to say “yes” to free work—and when you absolutely shouldn’t.
