8.16.26: The Walk: I often meet with a good friend of mine, share some coffee, maybe a pastry, discuss life and ideas that have come to pass since our last visit and often take our conversation on the road, exploring different areas of the city on foot, with a camera in hand, no destination set, and no hesitation to investigate anything of interest along the way. We’ve discovered much about the city that we would have never known to exist simply by opening a door and seeing what lies behind. We chat with strangers, occasionally trespass, intentionally or unintentionally, while separately investigating things that pull at us. I’m carrying my camera of course, with no subject in mind, opening myself up to whatever may pull at me. As a photographer, allowing myself the space to just observe and be in the moment with no direction or intention is a practice that I believe to benefit me in how I see things. No purpose, no pressure, just following the pull.
My walking companion follows her own pull, childlike curiosity reveling in the beauty of the natural world, and the small marks that we humans leave on it, whether it be small acts of creativity or functional designs of our spaces. Striking up conversations with complete strangers, inquiring beyond the standard exchange, in an attempt to inspire a brief thought about their day.
She drifts towards her curiosities while I quietly pursue my own, all the while letting the conversation flow as our stream of consciousness does. From an observer's perspective we appear to either have some creative mischievous agenda, or are just a couple of wandering idiots. Both are applicable.
These are photos from one morning of those walks. My companion often becomes an unintentional human prop in the photos, as she pays little attention to me taking photos, following her own curiosity in those moments.
Over the course of 3 years we’ve been taking these walks, and I imagine someday they will come to an end, as do all things in life. Enjoy the moment, open a door, stop and witness this immense world that you exist in for just a moment, talk to a stranger, walk with no destination…It’s all about the journey isn’t it
