TROPICS ROUND-UP | August 9, 2026

We continue to watch our two areas of interest that recently emerged off Africa. The westernmost of the two waves continues to have a very low chance of development given (20% through 7 days), mainly because conditions are expected to become much less conducive for development later this week. However, chances for development of the easternmost of these two waves have increased since yesterday (50% through 7 days). Conditions are forecast to become more favorable for some organization by midweek as this second system moves west-northwest across the open Atlantic. A third area of interest has emerged off the Carolina coast, but this system is moving away from the US, and little development is expected due to increasingly cooler waters with eastward extent.

For now, the Gulf remains clear of any tropical threats.

Yesterday: Possible landspout sighting near Terrell near storms that moved through yesterday evening.

A landspout is a very weak non-supercellular tornado. Sometimes these form below storms and outflow boundaries.

TROPICS ROUND-UP | August 8, 2026

We're watching two new areas of potential tropical development out in the eastern Atlantic. Both of these consist of waves that recently moved off the African coast in the last few days. The westernmost one (area to watch #1 in the graphic) has a 20% chance of developing in the next seven days; while some gradual development may occur, conditions are expected to become much less conducive for development as it approaches the Lesser Antilles late this coming week. The other wave (area to watch #2) has a slightly higher chance of development, backed by some degree of model support. However, model consistency is still on the low side, so it's unclear how this wave may progress.

For now, the Gulf remains clear of any tropical threats.

326pm - A Severe Thunderstorm Warning is in effect for parts of Hunt, Hopkins and Delta Counties until 430pm. A storm capable of 60 MPH wind gusts and dime size hail is located over Cumby just west of Sulphur Springs. Slowly moving south.
