2018 Bluebonnet Bloom Status Update - 7 April 2018
Hurry! Hurry! Hurry! If you haven't gotten out in the bluebonnets yet -- or you haven't satisfied your fix -- y'all best get out this weekend.
Yes, bluebonnets will still be blooming for several weeks but with the recent rains and warm weather, y'all are racing against the grasses. We'd say for most of the southern areas of Texas -- Houston, Brenham, San Antonio, Austin -- y'all are approaching peak or you're at it. Pretty soon the bluebonnets will be setting seed, grasses will get ahead of them, and they won't be as fresh.
Y'all in the more northern reaches of Texas -- Waco, Dallas/Fort Worth, and Ennis -- bluebonnets have definitely begun to bloom. You too are racing against the grasses. We recommend getting out in the fields sooner rather than later.

Austin: we've gotten a ton more sightings reports this week for y'all -- especially for the Round Rock and Georgetown areas. Brenham: we got scads of sightings reports from the Easter weekend. Yes, Brenham is probably at peak. Go sooner rather than later. Y'all's biggest obstacle will probably be trampling. Corpus Christi: we didn't get a single sightings report for the Corpus area this week. We believe y'all are past peak and bluebonnets are setting seed pods as well as getting weedy. Click on http://bit.ly/corpusbb2018 for photos and location details from the last several weeks.
Dallas / Fort Worth: it's time for y'all to throw the young 'uns in the tub, gas up the car, and get out in the bluebonnets! For those of y'all lamenting the demise of the JCP field in Plano, last season a few new ones blew up that are blooming this season as well -- the Ford Dealership field in Grapevine, the Fujitsu field in Richardson, and a field in the Los Colinas area. Ennis: those of y'all just itchin' to get out to Ennis, you're in luck. While not all of Ennis is approaching peak -- their fields and roadsides west and north of town are just starting to come in -- they do have one outstanding field at Meadow View Nature Center that is in full bloom and from what they're saying it's gorgeous. It's lakeside and the bluebonnets are thick and luscious. (Maybe a "mini" Mach Road??) If y'all decide to head that way be sure to check out the Ennis Visitor Center website for trail maps, etc, or swing by their new location and chat with the nice folks. They will definitely have nice bluebonnets for the festival the weekend of April 21-22. If you don't go this weekend, be sure to go then. Hill Country: it's pretty much the same report we've been saying for the last several weeks -- nothing really to write home about. Sounds like it's a so-so season. However, the small field at Turkey Bend is blooming, Muleshoe has some "clumpy" bluebonnets, there are roadside blooms along Hwys 71 and 281, and FM 306 near Canyon Lake. Houston: y'all should be approaching peak this weekend as well. We're hearing there are still bluebonnets at the usual spots -- Terry Hershey Park, White Oak Bayou, the Hwy 96/Lawrence Road field in League City, and Rob Fleming Park in The Woodlands. We've heard the "Little Red Barn" patch in Pearland is now closed off to the public. A new location we've heard about is Willow Waterhole. San Antonio: sounds like y'all have had a pretty good season with sweet, new fields being reported. Y'all should be at peak as well so it's best to get out now before the grasses get ahead of them. Waco / Temple / Killeen: y'all should be approaching peak. In Killeen, the A&M campus is blooming nicely. Fort Hood has bluebonnets but we weren't given a location so we don't know which housing area. In Waco, Hwy 31 on the way to Corsicana is blooming nicely. And for Temple, bluebonnets are beginning to bloom along Loop 363, the 31st St railroad tracks, and along Hwy 95 near Holland. Click on http://bit.ly/wacobb2018 for photos and location details.
As we've said before, now is the time to get out in the bluebonnets! Yes, there will still be blooms for the next several weeks but y'all are definitely racing against the grasses.
