Moll Brau teamed up with Alexander Mercado of Suite 650 of Austin, Texas to create this bed of nails titled ‘Apparatus to Attain Spiritual Alchemy’ (2023) for her durational performance piece, where Brau slept on the nails for 7 nights as she conceptualized and manifested the series of 7 works on canvas that she produced for her solo exhibition with Rusha & Co. ‘Sweet Dreams’.

Brau’s performance was an attempt to gain a deeper sense of self through the mystic practice of Spiritual Alchemy, a divine science tied to early occultist practices. Alchemy is the art of transformation, of liberation, and of change through destruction, purification, integration, acceptance, alignment and rebuilding.

The piece, now presented sculpturally in her solo exhibition, can be seen at our gallery through June 24.
