The A🐝C's of backyard pollinator conservation:

☘️ ADD native plants to your garden. A wide variety that blooms in spring, summer, and fall will support pollinators in each stage of their lifecycles throughout the whole growing season.

🐝BEE mindful with mowing. Leaving some areas wild, mowing less frequently, and cutting at higher heights protects pollinator habitat.

🦋 CHOOSE conservation. Supporting healthy populations of native wildlife like birds, bats, amphibians, and dragonflies is a natural way to reduce reliance on pesticides that can harm pollinators.

Even a small patch of habitat makes a big difference for pollinating bees, butterflies, birds, moths, beetles, flower flies and more! Happy Pollinator Week!

Our pristine waters, lifestyle, fish, wildlife, and our future. This is why Mainers clean, drain, dry.

Once an aquatic invasive species is established in a body of water, that water changes forever - as an ecosystem, a resource, and treasured destination. Future generations deserve to experience the same clean, clear waters we enjoy today.

Prevention works. Keep the momentum going with specific clean drain dry actions for boaters, paddlers, and anglers at mefishwildlife.com/cdd.

Binoculars ready? Welcome to the first season of Maine Nest Quest, a community science mission to map Maine's nesting swifts and swallows!

Birders, paddlers, anglers, and landowners are a perfect fit for this project, but anyone who enjoys a good outdoor scavenger hunt is welcome to join the flock!

All swift and swallow nests count, but your main mission is to locate nesting colonies of two State Threatened species - bank swallows and cliff swallows. With every reported observation, Maine Nest Questers will power bird conservation.

How to join the quest:
Swoop on over to mefishwildlife.com/mainenestquest to explore project goals, learn what to look for, and start submitting observations.

The loss of Game Warden Pilot Joshua Tibbetts continues to be felt throughout the Maine Warden Service and the many communities he served.

This film shares moments from Josh’s funeral service and the remarkable tribute paid to him by fellow wardens, law enforcement officers, first responders, family, friends, and members of the public who gathered to honor his life and service.

We are grateful for the support shown to Josh’s loved ones and to our agency during this difficult time.

Please BEE on the lookout for the rusty patched bumble bee!

The rusty patched bumble bee has not been observed in Maine since 2009, but with a little bit of optimism and a lot of observation, you could be the one who puts them back on the map…if you know what to look for.

This Endangered species has a few doppelgangers in Maine so close-up photos are very helpful for identification.

❌ Two rusty belts? Nope, not that one.
❌ A brown or rusty patch surrounded by black? Swing and a miss.
✅ Rusty patched bumble bees have a patch of rust, bordered by yellow, confined specifically to the second section of their abdomen.

The rusty-patched bumble bee isn’t just any bee. It is the first bumble bee to be protected by the U.S. Endangered Species Act. A catalyst for pollinator conservation, the species has declined 90% just since the 1990s. We’re hopeful they are still out there somewhere in Maine, and now is the perfect time to search.
