Tips for photography of the aurora:

Set your camera on Manual Settings, and Manual Focus. Focus manually to infinity(as far as focus will go). Remove any lens filter you keep on your lens. Use a tripod!!!
Aperture: as wide open as your lens will go. f/1.8 would be ideal
ISO: almost as high as your camera will go. (The highest setting will definitely be too much noise. Try the next one down). Ideal is 6400
Shutter speed: start with about 2 full seconds. If the scene is still totally dark, increase shutter speed. If the scene is totally blown out with light, try a faster shutter speed.

Best place to view is a dark open view to the north. About midnight or after is often best, but with solar storms you never know.
Find a prominent star to check your focus!
Having something interesting in the foreground can make your photo better.
Set your camera up at home. Changing settings in the dark is tough, and can ruin your night vision. Bring a red flashlight!
