Fresh off a talk at the University of Georgia about his brand spankin’ new photo book, and then another at the University of South Carolina, ’ Trembling Earth was even written about at CNN! The latest issue of Bitter Southerner has this drool-worthy ad for his new book. Congrats on this magnificent and other-worldly body of visual environmental advocacy work, David! That one time told Julia Roberts that her grandma (whose mama’s maiden name was Roberts and also from Georgia) always said they were related. We still don’t know if it is a family myth or not, but Julia handled the awkwardness with grace 😂

There was talk in our creative meetings of wanting an ownable film-like aesthetic for a big lifestyle campaign we worked on last year where images would stack and flash by in multiple commercials. So we figured that while yes, we’d shoot with our big boy/girl cameras and all the gear, we could also shoot film on little Olympus 35mm fixed lens cameras. Every day someone on our crew would run handfuls of rolls to the local film lab in Vancouver. It did add a certain extra spontaneity and surprise that is more fun when it’s the real thing instead of a filter added in post.

And we love this blurb from Vital Impacts:
David Walter Banks doesn’t just make photographs, he transforms the familiar into something otherworldly. He sees straight through the surface of things and reimagines the everyday, revealing moments of magic and mystery in places we thought we already knew. Whether through stylized portraiture or deeply personal documentary work, David has a gift for turning the world on its head and inviting us to look closer.

A self-proclaimed “swamp creature,” David brings both heart and artistry to his long-form storytelling. In this session, he’ll take us behind the scenes of Trembling Earth, his three-year odyssey through Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp, a place he renders as both endangered landscape and dreamlike world. He’ll share the lessons, doubts, and discoveries that shaped the project, and offer honest insights into finding your own creative voice in the process of long-term storytelling.
