Most people walk right past this moment.

Thirty minutes earlier, Cannon Beach was crowded. Then the sun slipped below the horizon, the sky caught fire, and Haystack Rock became nothing more than a silhouette against the fading light.

Of all the interesting names used to reference a group of animals, one of my favorites is a "flamboyance" as captured in this 2023 image from our Tanzanian safari. A lioness enjoys a mid-morning rest in a posture common for African big cats.

Lounging in trees with legs dangling provides stability, their legs serving as counterweights locking their center of gravity and preventing them from rolling off the branch while sleeping. This positioning also creates cooling ventilation and offers a vantage point to scan for predators and prey.
