These two are my ♥️. When I look at this picture of my kids, it brings such a smile to my face because it is so THEM. Being silly. Laughing. Looking like they are just on the cusp of some mischief.

As they move at anything BUT a slow pace, always running…jumping…doing cartwheels, they have taught me to slow down and truly appreciate the little joys life has to offer. They made me a mother and continuously give me moments to express love and patience like never before. (Oh, and I am happy that I can still turn cartwheels with my daughter.)

Happy Mother’s Day!

(Shout out to school picture photographers Lil Angels Photography Atlanta for capturing my kids’ personalities.)

Sometimes, we follow our dreams. Other times, our lives take us in the opposite direction or along a parallel path. It all depends on which season we are in.

If we are lucky, there is some overlap and the two paths converge. However, also if we are lucky, we embrace those times when we are in a "life" season and open ourselves up to the possibility that new dreams may materialize along the way...or that our current dreams will still be in clear view down the road. 🤞🏾

We can't always control whether competing desires, family responsibilities, illness, work obligations, or other factors take us off course from achieving our goals right here, right now. It can be frustrating, discouraging, and draining to continue to chase your dreams when your life is rerouting you in another direction. 🛣

At times, you may find yourself holding onto a dream because you've "always wanted to do that," even if, truth be told, you no longer want that thing. There can be internal pressure to not "give up" on long-held dreams. But, you aren't giving up; you are simply honoring where you currently are in life.

Which season are you in?

What do you do when your shoot doesn't go as planned after you've FINALLY set aside time to create? Here is what I did.

But, first, a little backstory... I saw 's Peach Tomato Caprese Salad and knew that I wanted to make it. The different shapes and colors of the ingredients just spoke to me.

Well, you know how when you make a recipe and at the end you think, "that looks nothing like the picture?" Well, I made it and thought it looked too much like the picture. So, I decided to add a sliced half of peach to switch things up a bit. Plus, the circular shape and placement added even more visual interest by breaking up the repetition of the other ingredients.

But, because I had not scheduled time for this personal shoot (see the prep shot a few posts back for context), the peaches had gone bad by the time I decided to create these images (swipe left).

I'm not gonna lie, I was bummed. I was in a zone because I finished creating some preparation shots that I loved and felt like I had my mojo back. Great. Now what?! I nipped the pity party in the bud, flipped on the metaphorical lights (if you've been to the club or any dance party, you will hopefully get that reference), and decided to forge ahead and see what I could salvage in Photoshop. A little clone stamp here, patch there, and voila.

Everything tastes better with cheese. Am I right or am I right?

I love to put 🧀 on top of 🍔, mix it in 🍳, and dip my 🥨 in it. My kids just like to eat it plain.

How about you? What’s your favorite way to enjoy cheese?

(On this , I’m sharing an oldie but goodie of this beautiful cheeseboard styled by a couple of years ago.)

When it comes to your flat lays, is your motto more “get in and get out” or “let me stay a while?”

By that I mean, do you just create the one hero image that you had in mind or do you exhaust all of your options?

Sometimes, it is challenging to figure out other images you can create with the same props (swipe for examples). If the struggle is real for you, then head over to my blog (link in profile) to read my process for creating multiple images in one shoot.

Also, if you want to learn more about food photography, I will be speaking alongside 14+ other experts during the Master the Art of Food Photography Summit on June 9-11. You can get your FREE ticket at the link in my profile.

Create space for the things that bring you joy.

I used to think, “That sounds all well and good, but I don’t have time.” I have a 9-to-5 job, clients, and business admin tasks...not to mention, 2 small kids under 5 and a husband. Where is the time for myself?

I finally figured out that I had to be intentional about creating that space and flexible, at times, about how and when it occurs. For example, I recently rediscovered my love of roller skating. To make sure that I still build in family time, I sometimes take my daughter with me to the rink. Seeing her determination as she makes her way around the rink and experiencing my own excitement as I do the same, bring me joy.

What brings you joy?

(Something else that brings me joy? This image that I created for . It’s one of my favorites. 😁)

These two little ones are always on the move, which leads to a wild ride for this mama...and TBH, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

But, truth be told, I was ambivalent about having kids. No, I didn’t have a difficult childhood or a fraught relationship with my mother. I just never really thought about it...just like I never dreamed about getting married like *all* little girls allegedly do.

However, society will have you believing that all women should want to have kids. I even had a friend who went so far as to say that it was selfish of me not to want kids. 🙄 Umm...ok. What is the UNselfish reason for *wanting* kids?

Eventually, there came a point when I did want kids, but it wasn’t so easy to fulfill that desire. I was angry that we had waited so long and thought I had missed my opportunity. Two miscarriages and 14 fibroids removed later, my sweet baby girl was born. I was 41. A few years later, my son joined the crew and completed our little family. (I tell you, my son is her shadow and wants to do everything she does!)

I’m wishing all of the mothers and mother figures a Happy Mother’s Day today and praying for all who are currently longing to be mothers and finding the road a bit rough. 💐 💕
