20 years ago my mother put a camera in my hands and told me to go outside and take some pictures.

I didn’t know that moment would become my whole life.

For over a year I grieved her, kept going, and somehow ended up standing in front of seven years of work wondering how I got here. The answer was her. It was always her.

An Ode to Black Women in Black & White was never just about the women I photographed. It was about what happens when you finally trust that the work you’ve been doing quietly, in small rooms and through hard seasons, was always enough.

These portraits are mine. A reminder that the photographer gets to be seen too.

I’m realizing it has been exactly 20 years since my mom handed me my first camera.
If I’m being honest, it’s been a heavy year of mourning her, especially given our complicated history. But as I moved into this new year and started gathering my images for my black-and-white book, I felt a sense of release come from within.

We did it! My first photo exhibition, An Ode to Black Women in Black & White. In our small rooms we’ve created a big dream 🖤what I’ve always wanted is to create a space not just for women to feel beautiful, but to also feel dignified, strong, and confident. I want a session with me to be the turning point when someone can look back on and say- yes was a moment for me. This project was to honor the women who have carried me through a season, and to show love and give reflection and gratitude for the journey we’ve all been on.

A special thank you to all those who’ve helped me ! of for such beautiful arrangements, .iller for helping me with installation and direction, Kareema Hunter literally saved me with last minute help when help was no where to be found. To the kids who came and helped mommy, To my sister , and her twin Renee for helping with set up and my husband for helping with all the heavy lifting— thank you!! for all of the major bts work that has been done including catching a typo right before print!! You are appreciated!!!

This anthology is my love letter to Black women- poured straight from my heart and from deep in my soul. “An Ode to Black Women in Black & White” is a curated collection of every b&w portrait I’ve had the honor of creating since 2018.

We often think these sessions are for us, but they’re actually for the people who love us most.

Whether it’s for our children or for our own mothers, everyone deserves a portrait of their family that they are proud of… not a “perfect” version. We all deserve to see the way we were looked at and the way we were held.

For those who still have their mothers and grandmothers here: please don’t wait. I know firsthand how much those images matter when they are all you have left to hold. Giving a grandmother the gift of a portrait with her grandchildren is a legacy of dignity and pride that outlives us all.
