My husband divorced me after he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and married another woman — after his funeral, she appeared at my door and whispered, "He made me promise to reveal the truth only after he died."
Robert and I shared thirty-nine years of marriage. We had been through life’s hardest trials together.
But when Robert was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, he pulled his hand away from mine.
"I don’t want you beside me," he said. "I want to spend the end of my life with the person I love."
His words still echo in my head.
Three weeks after our divorce, he married Claire, a coworker who was ten years younger than me.
Robert wore the blue tie I had given him for our anniversary. I hated him for that most of all.
He died four months later.
I didn’t go to the funeral, even though I cried the entire day after I heard the news.
Nothing could have prepared me for the shock of seeing a grief-stricken Claire standing on my doorstep the next morning.
"I came because there’s something important I need to tell you about Robert," she said, her voice pleading.
For reasons I couldn’t explain, I let her in.
She looked nervous and refused to meet my eyes. Then, without warning, she said:
"You still don’t understand what Robert truly did for you, do you?"
I froze.
"What exactly are you saying?"
Claire reached into her purse and pulled out something that made me clutch my chest.
"He told me to find you ONLY AFTER HE DIED. He wanted to make absolutely sure you received what YOU DESERVED."
I reached for what she was holding. My heart stopped.
