In the heart of Lansing, NC, CJ’s Market was more than a grocery store—it was a lifeline for this rural mountain town. When Hurricane Helene tore through the region, nearly everything was lost.

Now, more than 9 months later, the community is still fighting to bring it back.

One of the first people we met with after Hurricane Helene was Anna. She and her family - like so many others - lost everything. The road to recovery is filled with many emotions and even more decisions - many times these decisions had to be made in the middle of all the emotions.

Where can I stay?
What can I save?
Should I rebuild?
Can I start over?

4 months after Helene, most of these questions have been answered yet so many are still in limbo. It’s hard to move forward on rebuilds without the finances or waiting on FEMA to move forward or the lucky few who are holding out hoping to get something - anything from insurance companies.
