They dive down, stop moving, and drift perfectly vertical in the open ocean, resembling massive monolithic pillars suspended in the deep. They only sleep for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time, entering a brief but incredibly deep collective slumber. During this window, they are completely unresponsive to the world around them.
And yet, seeing this giant hover here shows just how deeply peaceful they can be.

Because they are totally defenseless while sleeping, they must perfectly calculate their natural buoyancy so they don't sink too deep before waking up to the surface for air.
