Real talk: I have run a charity event every year for 16 years for genetically or medically challenged kids. It's named the "Sabina Hartley-Burke and Ava Jane Gibson Memorial Princess sessions" because it's in memory of two little girls that I did photos for before this was an annual thing and I wanted everyone you know about these girls. But when i and others share online, it's tends to get shortened to just "memorial princess sessions". Last year though, a few people raised a point about how the name could be confusing or triggering for people with medically fragile children and it was suggested that I change the name, maybe to Warrior Princess sessions or something similar. At the time, I pushed back because no way could I just change it after 16 years of it being named this way but now as I prepare for year 17... I'm reconsidering. I'd love to hear from you, please take the time to tell me your thoughts. If you want to tell me in email instead or in public, email me at [email protected].
My only concern with changing it is that I never ever want Sabina or Ava's families to feel like I'm removing their daughters from this event. Their names will absolutely stay, it'd just morph to 'in honor of' instead. I'm hoping to hear from those two families before I make my decision.
