The Gulf is angry.

Powerful waves from Tropical Storm Bertha are slamming Navarre Beach, Florida, with dangerous surf conditions, red flags, and waves exploding over the seawall.

Beachgoers were still seen entering the water as massive waves rolled in, highlighting the dangerous conditions developing along the northern Gulf Coast.

This is a reminder that tropical systems can create life-threatening surf and rip currents well away from the center of the storm.

Conditions are expected to remain hazardous along beaches from the Florida Panhandle through Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

are expected to develop first this afternoon across southeast and eastern , especially near , , and Fort Morgan. This area has the best chance of seeing isolated supercells capable of very large hail, damaging winds, and a few tornadoes before storms begin to merge together.

As the evening goes on, storms will spread east and southeast into , , western , and the Texas Panhandle. For the Panhandle, including , the best window looks to be roughly 6 PM through midnight, with large hail and damaging winds being the primary threats. By late evening and overnight, storms should begin forming larger clusters, shifting the main threat toward widespread strong winds as they move east.

Today's severe weather threat is not your typical summertime thunderstorm setup.

Forecasters are highlighting a corridor across portions of and where conditions may support intense supercell thunderstorms capable of producing very large hail, destructive winds, and potentially strong, long track tornadoes. While not everyone in the risk area will experience severe weather, those who do could see storms that become dangerous very quickly.

If you live anywhere within the enhanced or moderate risk areas, now is the time to review your safety plan. Know where you'll take shelter if a warning is issued, make sure your phone is charged, and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts. Do not rely solely on outdoor warning sirens.
For those who struggle with storm anxiety, remember that a forecast is not a guarantee that severe weather will occur at your exact location. The purpose of these outlooks is to give you time to prepare, not to scare you. Being informed and having a plan in place is one of the best ways to stay safe and reduce anxiety during severe weather events.

🌴 Gulf Coast Tropical Update 🌀

A Tropical Storm Watch is now in effect from Sargent, , eastward to Morgan City, as Potential Tropical Cyclone One moves toward the northwestern Coast. The system is expected to become a short lived tropical storm by Wednesday before moving inland near the Texas Louisiana border.

The biggest concern is heavy rainfall and flash , not the wind. Widespread rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected across portions of southeast and eastern Texas, Louisiana, southern , southern , and the western Panhandle. Some locations could see isolated totals up to 12 inches, leading to significant flash flooding and rises on rivers and streams.

Along the coast, storm surge of 2 to 4 feet above normally dry ground is possible from Port Bolivar, Texas, to Morgan City, Louisiana, especially if the surge arrives around the time of high tide. Coastal flooding, rough surf, and dangerous rip currents are also expected.

Tropical storm force winds are possible within the watch area beginning Wednesday, with the strongest winds expected near and east of where the center comes ashore. A few isolated tornadoes may also develop along parts of the Texas and Louisiana coastlines.

Residents along the upper Texas and Louisiana coasts should continue monitoring forecasts and be prepared for rapidly changing conditions over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Severe thunderstorms are expected across several regions of the country today and tonight, with the greatest concentration of severe weather stretching across parts of the Midwest. Storms in this area may produce large hail, damaging wind gusts, and a few tornadoes, especially across portions of where a 5% tornado risk has been outlined. While not everyone will see severe weather, any storms that develop could become intense rather quickly.

Farther south, scattered thunderstorms are expected along the Gulf Coast as deep tropical moisture continues to stream inland. Heavy rainfall will be the primary concern, with some locations seeing repeated rounds of storms that could lead to localized flooding. An isolated tornado cannot be ruled out in this region, as a 2% tornado risk remains in place from the coast eastward into parts of and .

Additional thunderstorms are also possible across portions of the Plains, though severe weather should be more isolated. Anyone in the highlighted risk areas should remain alert for rapidly changing weather conditions through tonight.

Possible Tropical Storm?

A broad area of low pressure near the Texas/Mexico border continues to generate widespread showers and thunderstorms. As the system moves back over the northwestern Gulf today, there is a chance it could organize into a short lived tropical storm later today or Wednesday.

Regardless of development, residents across southern and eastern , as well as parts of and , should be prepared for several rounds of heavy rainfall through the coming days. This could lead to significant flash flooding, urban flooding, and rising rivers. Gusty winds and minor coastal flooding are also possible along portions of the northwestern Gulf Coast.

Tropical Storm Watches or Warnings may be issued later today if conditions warrant. Stay tuned to updates from the National Hurricane Center and your local National Weather Service office for the latest information.

An Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) for severe weather is in place today across portions of the central and northern Plains into parts of the Midwest. Residents within the Enhanced Risk area should be prepared for a significant severe weather event capable of producing multiple rounds of dangerous thunderstorms.

Storms are expected to develop during the afternoon and continue through the evening and overnight hours. The strongest storms may become supercells capable of producing very large hail up to 2"-3", damaging wind gusts of 70mph to 80mph, and several tornadoes, some of which could become strong. The highest tornado threat will be associated with any discrete supercells that can remain isolated before storms eventually grow into larger clusters or lines. Widespread wind damage may become the primary concern later in the evening as storms organize and accelerate eastward. Anyone within the Enhanced Risk area should have multiple ways to receive warnings and be prepared to take action quickly if watches or warnings are issued. Severe weather of this magnitude can produce significant impacts over a large area in a relatively short period of time.
