Since I will be leaving Craven Gap on Monday and heading to Crabtree Falls Campground for my six-week Interpreter-in-Residence gig for the Parkway and the BRP Foundation, this is likely to be the last Image I post for some time.
My plan still is to be west of the Hundredth Meridian by sometime in early September and to begin working on the Public Lands book project by early in 2023. By that time I will have winnowed the Public Lands resources down to somewhere around 125 locations and the number of interviews down to 30-40. I am really excited about the prospects for this adventure.
For today's Image I decided to use something from our final workshop in the Southwest from Capitol Reef National Park. In Capitol Gorge along Capitol Wash we found a wonderfully gnarly old tree whose tonality had taken on the the hues of the late evening sun. It was a light show that was pure magic.
In a side note, the average price of a gallon of gas in the US has now topped $5.00. Your participation as subscriber to my Patreon page, www.Patreon.com/donmcgowan, will make the journey much more feasible, and there are some neat benefits that are go with the support.

Good afternoon Everyone,
Tomorrow morning I will be posting a new Image for the Asking for those of you on the EarthSong mailing list; but those of you who are part of the Facebook group are having a chance to see it now.
It's an abstract expressionist Image from Oak Creek Canyon in Northern Arizona between Sedona and Flagstaff taken on my way to the final EarthSong Southwest Workshop in September '21. Oak Creek and its amazing canyon offer some of the most amazing and wonderful visuals to be found on the Colorado Plateau.
On June 13 I begin my summer gig as Interpreter in Residence at Crabtree Falls Campground, MM339.5 Blue Ridge Parkway, NC. The plan is still to head west in September to begin work on the Public Lands book project, but with gas prices out of control and soaring, I welcome all support for my Patreon page, www.Patreon.com/donmcgowan. There are some pretty neat rewards available in return. I hope you are are still planning to join me for the adventure.

Perhaps since my posts have become so irregular and so infrequent of late, you will indulge me. I am very happy to announce that beginning in June (13th) and continuing until early September I am going to serve as the Interpreter in Residence at the Crabtree Falls Campground, MM339.5, on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Yancey County, North Carolina. If you find yourself on the BRP this summer come by and enjoy the outstanding beauty of one of the Parkway's finest sights.
In September I will begin the journey West to continue work on the public lands book project. Both of these are parts of the final adventure to which I have been looking forward for some time.
The YouTube channel is almost ready to launch and the Patreon page is up and running: www.Patreon.com/dommcgowan. During the final Southwest Workshop in September 2021 we visited Factory Butte in the San Rafael Desert for a sunrise and were blessed with one of the most amazing early light experiences I have ever enjoyed in the Southwest.
It's all about the great Beauty of our national common wealth and the obligation we have as citizens of a free land to protect and preserve that Beauty.

Since sharing images and the process of creating images is what I do, almost without thinking about it, I thought I would share a bit of a different sort of expressive image in which the elements of composition are identified, yet only partially revealed. A simple collection of pieces of forest floor detritus - lines, shapes, forms, patterns, textures and colors - assembled with clear relationships. A forest still-life of sorts.

If I inadvertently led someone to think that last week's Image was the final one, please forgive me. My intention was always to offer the final Image on the Sunday (20th) before I begin my big adventure on March 25th. Both of the final Images - today and next week - will come from Great Smoky Mountains National Park, where my heart was born.

What better to do on a day like today than to wish the the Grand Canyon a Happy Birthday. It was on February 26, 1918 that President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the Grand Canyon as the newest national park in a new system of public lands that was, itself, less than two years old at the time.

At Pounding Mill Overlook the Blue Ridge Parkway and Pisgah National Forest come together in a location filled with beauty and history; a place of creative opportunity and meditative possibility where the history of these old hills meets mountains filled with wonder.

Hello Everyone, A
new Image has been posted to the website, www.EarthSongPhotography.com. Please join me for our on-going conversation of Beauty and photographic creativity. Edward Abbey loved Arches National Park long before it was a national park. I've always thought that even as much of a curmudgeon as Abbey was, his taste in public land was impeccable.

As the Black Canyon of the Gunnison River can attest, there are lots of hungry lichen that love nothing more than to chew on the various lithic substrates of this marvelous 2 billion-year-old Colorado ditch, volcanic or otherwise.
