Are you preparing for in-home newborn photos and wondering how many spaces you need to get ready?

Most of the time I tell families just 1-3!

👶🏻If you have a nursery you want to use along with your bed and the couch, that’s great! But we could also do your entire session in the corner of your dining room corner if you’d like!

☀️ My strategy is always to follow the light!

Here are a few ideas for in-home newborn session photo spots:
✨ Nursery
✨ Front Porch
✨ Living Room Couch
✨ Master Bed or Guest Bed
✨ Front Yard/Back Yard
✨ Kitchen
✨ Stairway
✨ Playroom
✨ Any corner/wall near a big window

There are so many options! 😍

🔎Leading up to your session, start paying attention to which rooms are the brightest during which times of day! I typically plan my newborn sessions for around 10:30AM but if the master bedroom you want to use gets amazing lighting in the late afternoon, let’s go for it!

🙋🏻‍♀️Not sure which area or lighting is best? Send me photos of the rooms you are considering! We can collaborate and plan for your session to have the most flattering lighting and narrow down the options so you don’t need to tidy up the whole house while also caring for a newborn! Mama to mama, there’s no judgement here!

🌳🌸☀️Would you rather have your newborn session outdoors instead? That is 100% an option and I can still bring my wraps, blankets, and baby Moses basket for you!

“Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever” ✨

Thinking of all of the amazing moms and motherly figures who have been in my life and in front of my camera! You inspire me to be a better mom ❤️

I’m also thinking of those who have lost a mom, who have lost a child, or who long to be a mom. I know days like today can be heavy for so many but I pray you can still find hope, a hug, and maybe something yummy to eat. 🤍

Do you want photos of your own family like this?

🤔Maybe you’re thinking, aww wow I wish we could get family photos like these but… our kids probably wouldn’t behave, or we are just not that photogenic, or I don’t think my husband would get on board, or I don’t know how to dress everybody, or it’s not in the budget.

There are always plenty of reasons you might put off that family photo session. But the kids are only getting older…and so are we 🙈

Here are my thoughts on the common reasons we postpone family photos…

1. Kids’ Behaviors: Not only have I been photographing children for over a decade now, I have my Masters of Education in School Counseling and taught/supported a wide range of neurotypical and neurodiverse children for 6 years! I have plenty of strategies, tools and patience to help your child feel comfortable and have fun!

2. “We’re not photogenic”: The clients you see on my social media and website are not paid models, although I think they are all lovely! I believe that you are beautifully and wonderfully made and make it a part of my job to photograph you that way!

3. “My husband won’t get on board”: Start out by letting your husband know that quality family photos are important to you! I imagine his algorithm is much different than yours, so share posts with him that encompass the photographer and style you love! Holidays are a great time to ask for updated family photos and I am def not above bribing my husband with food or golf!

4. What to wear: I’ve got you mama!! Each Spring and Fall I release a Family Styling Guide with color schemes, inspo, and shoppable links! Leading up your session I am available to help with your outfit decisions too!

5. Budget: We are all willing to save and spend money on the things we want and photos outlive most of the fleeting things we buy anyway! If having quality family photos taken while the kids are young or the family is in town means a lot to you, then it’s going to be worth the investment! (I also offer payment plans, discounts for return clients, and you can now use after-pay at checkout!)

This COLOR though!!! 🌸🌳☀️

I have found myself appreciating the fleeting beauty of Spring blooms more this year than I can ever remember.

🌸 Like these gorgeous azalea blooms you see have already come and gone and I won’t get to capture a session like this for anothet year 😢…but also, isn’t that what makes it so special?

🕰️ I’m forced to cherish the blooms in their moment in time because their days are numbered.

🌳 But I think what I love most about Spring is that all of these blooms are bringing in green grass and green leaves that will be around to stay for the next 6 months! We get to anticipate Summer, vacations, and days spent at the pool!

🍁 I’m usually a Fall girlie but I do get so sad knowing that all of those gorgeous red, orange and yellow leaves mean that winter is coming and the trees will be bare and the mountains will be brown for many months to come.

🐝So don’t mind me, I’m going to be over here soaking in all of the Spring vibes. All of the blooms and birds nests and cool mornings and sunshine. Can you tell I don’t have allergies? 😂

I know I’m nostalgic and biased, but I feel like we really had SO much fun music in 2011! This list doesn’t even include Mumford and Sons, Jason Derulo, Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Kesha, Foster the People, Macklemore, Usher, Nelly, Flo Rida and so many more!

I feel like as millennial moms we are constantly, heart-wrenching-ly aware of how fast time goes and how quickly our babies are growing up.

Social media is reminding us to count our summers and make magical core memories.

Thoughtful strangers at the grocery store are reminding us of how they miss those days and it goes by fast. (These comments don’t bother me, for the record)

Time hops and iPhone memories pop up with photos of tiny toes and chubby cheeks.

And our own childhood is in the rearview mirror getting further and further away from us.

But no matter how tightly I cling to these precious early childhood years with my girls, they just keep slipping through my fingers.

“The days are long, but the years are short”
I know! Make it stop!!

I guess I don’t really have advice for you mamas wanting to freeze time, but I’m right here with you. ❤️

And look, it’s not because my kids are perfect or parenting is easy. We just finished Spring Break which was mixed with both fun memories and family time as well as frustration and tantrums and whining and potty accidents.

There will always be distractions to make us wish parts of an age/stage away.

But then last night my husband and I spent 20+ minutes just looking at old photos and videos from when the girls were babies and wondering where the time had gone.

Personally, I’m just going to take this parenting/life thing one prayerful day at a time and try to do what Mary did after Jesus’ birth and treasure all of these things and ponder them in my heart. (Luke 2:19) Motherhood isn’t my whole identity but it is my calling in this season and I just want to do it well.
