When I walked in, they were cooking up food and the light shined directly on Hans. I got giddy. Of course I didn’t know who Hans was yet, I just loved the moment, I loved the light, and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.
As it turned out this is Elaine’s ( ) dad, which made it more special.
While I wholeheartedly believe that as a photographer, and as an artist, I have to follow my own heart, follow my gut, follow where my attentions goes. That’s what my couples have hired me for - how I see them. And when there is so much intention on the front end of getting to know my couples, I feel that at some point our perspectives, our focuses, our eyes align.
This would never have happened from a shot list. No planner would have ever tapped me on the shoulder and said “could you get a photo of that?” This is thirteen years of figuring out my point of view. This is pure feeling. It’s also a little bit of luck.
You can serve by following orders and you can serve by connecting deeply. There is no right or wrong. For me I’ll always take the latter.
