When I walked in, they were cooking up food and the light shined directly on Hans. I got giddy. Of course I didn’t know who Hans was yet, I just loved the moment, I loved the light, and at the end of the day that’s all that matters.

As it turned out this is Elaine’s ( ) dad, which made it more special.

While I wholeheartedly believe that as a photographer, and as an artist, I have to follow my own heart, follow my gut, follow where my attentions goes. That’s what my couples have hired me for - how I see them. And when there is so much intention on the front end of getting to know my couples, I feel that at some point our perspectives, our focuses, our eyes align.

This would never have happened from a shot list. No planner would have ever tapped me on the shoulder and said “could you get a photo of that?” This is thirteen years of figuring out my point of view. This is pure feeling. It’s also a little bit of luck.

You can serve by following orders and you can serve by connecting deeply. There is no right or wrong. For me I’ll always take the latter.

What does it mean to feel seen?

As the face of your business, it can mean everything. What people see and assume from that is often what they believe.

And unless you run video, the average person is not going to read all of your copy that you worked so tirelessly on, so a lot rests on your ability to communicate who you are, what you do, and how you can make them feel all through a portrait of you.

That’s a lot of pressure for you to “get it right the first time.”

When Kate first reached out to me, her first note was that she didn’t have any straight on portraits of herself on her website. Everything was looking off to the side. But as we dug deeper we uncovered some words that eventually helped guide our session: nourish, lead, essence, journey, intimacy, depth, connection, and raw.

As we worked, Kate was completely open to trying different things and going off the cuff - to follow her feelings. And she trusted me to be where I needed to be as she moved through the emotion and the exploration of this new season of her life and business. She let me see her.

And in the end we made some work that is primed to help not just scale but create more intention and first impression connection in her executive coaching for founders and high growth leaders.

Whether you are revamping your site or your family photos the approach I take to help you find what you really want is the same. I work hard to create a space where it’s safe to be exactly who you are, can you find the courage in you to bare those vulnerabilities and look deeper into how you want to be seen or how you want to remember this time in your life?

You’ve heard me gush about them before from their engagement to their wedding to meet ups here in Asheville over good beers and even better conversation…The Joyners.

I love them.

And last month I finally got to meet their two girls, Little MissMiss and Crazy Legs. Not sure if those nicknames will stick, but they were so much fun.

This really was a great time, but more so a purpose lived out and realized.

When I started my photography business 12 years ago, the goal was always to take couples from engagement and through the rest of their lives…the wedding was just another stop along the way. And I got to realize that with Jade and Daniel and their girls.

It means the world to me that they shared their time and family with me once again and damn did we have fun!

From elevator mishaps, to couch flying, to thundering picnics and Blue Ridge overlooks, and wrapped up with a couple of cocktails - we made it a full day.

If you’re new, welcome! And if you’ve been around for a while, welcome back.

If you don’t know, I’m Adam Chapin.

I’m a photographer based out of Asheville, North Carolina. I’m self-deprecating, verbose, and my 11-year old says I’m too adventurous.

My last name is actually Brophy. I don’t use my last name, though 95% of my friends call me by it, is that the -phy in photography and the -phy of my last name rhyme and I’m a little OCD and couldn’t have a rhymy brand name. And here we are.

I was Born in Philly. Married for near 17 years. Father of two boys. Dog lover. Taco eater. Restaurant recommender. Van camper. Wes Anderson film watcher. Self-deprecator. Music collector. Golf ball whacker. Curse word lover (l give all the f***s).

I’ve been a professional photographer for over a decade but had a camera in hand since I was 18 after a stint with a Zen monastery fell through.

What I love most about this medium is the ability to connect with other human beings on an intimate and vulnerable level. Most folks don’t enjoy or at a minimum are unsure what to do in front of the camera. So it provides an opportunity to see and interact with a side of folks they may not often share, and through that I believe I get to see them more as they really are when the masks are off.

I love connecting with all of my clients from wedding couples to families to personal portraits. It’s humbling to share moments with people I would have never otherwise met if it weren’t for this two pound image making contraption around my neck, and that’s important as an extroverted introvert.

While I enjoy interaction, I definitely need to recharge at times. So I listen to podcasts (Armchair Expert is my go to right now), watch a good show or seven (anyone else sad Succession is ending), read a book (currently page flipping The Creative Act by Rick Rubin), or disappearing into the mountains or the scenery somewhere.

Anyway. Glad to see you and glad to be seen. Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!

A little excerpt from the new journal post up on my website now (link in profile):

“If I was ChatGPT, which I’m not, but if I was and I had transcripts of all the Zooms and emails and texts between me, Emily and Zachary over the last year and a half, I might have expected their wedding to be in a hockey rink, in Paris, with cats in the stands, a lawyer as the ref, and the starting lineup of the Carolina Hurricanes as the wedding party. Though that would only be if I was ChatGPT, which as I already said I am not and computers can’t lie, or can’t lie well.”

What do you get when you cross an Assistant Attorney General with a Family Law Attorney and a batch of the best Moravian cookies this side of Moravia?

I don’t know. Jokes aren’t my specialty, and now I dig Moravian cookies.

But what I do know is that Emily ( ) and Zachary ( ) know how to throw a wedding!

Had a great time with them, their families and their friends all weekend.

We’ve been through a pandemic together, more Zooms that. I am sure any of us care to count, an amazing Rocky Mountain engagement session, a few cocktails, some great meals, one amazing wedding, and a little Denver ramen for lunch.

When I tell couples that trust and access are at the heart of what makes good photos better, this is what I mean.

I love that we were able to connect so many times and over so many different situations. And Dustin and James were pot committed from the beginning (not a Denver w**d joke, just a bad poker pun…but no we never played poker).

This first image in the series is my favorite from the wedding day. It’s the in between moments that are the moments. Family photos are fine (just kidding…no one wants to do them but we are convinced that they’ll be worthwhile years down the line) but those honest moments of calls to find a family member who was not paying attention to the schedule, the fixing of hair, the yawn, I love it all because this is all of them as they are any other time. And is that what we want?

Fairytales are great for bedtime, but genuineness and candidness are where I feel the beauty of any wedding comes out.

Prove me wrong.

Oh…and Dustin and James’ wedding are now up on the journal. So go take a read a look!

This was a time to remember! (New blog post, check the link in my profile)

Maybe because I resonate deeply with the people and their specific spaces and times in their lives.

Raising two boys, working, making life work, staying connected, living through a pandemic, and trying to capture a little bit of what now really looks like.

When Danielle and I first talked, there was this idea of a clean space and making things look pretty. But I sat back into my own experiences and where I find value in memories. And it’s always in the nitty gritty, unclean, unkept, and unmasked moments with my boys. So when I asked Danielle what she truly wanted to remember, a weekend at a rental or their real life, after a a couple days I think it sank in and the real sounded more appealing.

Listen, our lives are always going to be messy. Literally and figuratively. We have animals, we have responsibilities, we have up days and down, s**t is out of order, messes are real, and we don’t always shower (or is that just me?). Ten years from now, seeing you as you and your family as they are is going to be wildly more valuable and honest.

I’m so stoked Danielle and her family trusted me and gave me this kind of access, even included her folks in the session which was so beautiful in front of and behind the camera.

Your world is worth being played in and remembered, and trust me, no one cares if there’s a mess anywhere.❤️

“How would you feel about coming to Denver for engagement photos?”

Not a hard question to respond to with a yes.

Damn did we have a good time for Dustin and James’ engagement session. From great conversations, to great food, to some amazing cocktails, to a drive through the Rockies and some November snows, and even a moment of having lost a lens and coming back to find that good people do good things.

New blog post up! Click the link in my profile 👆

Now with the new branding and new website done, I can finally share some long, long (maybe add a another “long” or two) overdue happiness.

And I’m starting here, with Sara and Jesse’s wedding from last July (I said long).

Such a killer wedding from top to bottom, but starting with two truly stand out and genuinely kind people in Sara and Jesse.

I’ve said a lot about them in posts, but going through their gallery again today I noticed something else that maybe I hadn’t before, or I had but just not to the same degree.

Throughout the night I have so many photos of them spending time, talking, laughing, dancing and drinking with just about every one of their wedding guests. Often, as a photographer, I notice that folks stick to their cliques, but it wasn’t even remotely the case here.

That may seem like nothing, but there is so much beautiful intention in having all the right folks at your wedding. So many people feel obliged to invite people they aren’t close with, but Sara and Jesse clearly chose people they cared for and who cared for them.

Just another reason I would have this day over with them again and again.

To all the amazing vendors 🤘

Jessa and Wayne’s vow renewal is on the blog (click the link in my profile)!

This was an eye opening experience. Honestly, since meeting them and photographing their wedding back in 2015, knowing Jessa and Wayne has been nothing short of refreshingly genuine.

In 2020, they gifted my work for a friends wedding in Seattle. I flew out and shot the wedding, and that night we linked up at a brewery across from our hotel.

We had the most amazing conversation filled with rawness, hard times, brutal awareness, and the reality of relationships. If you know me at all, you know that conversations that elicit these things is my honey hole.

Their sharing, their openness, their willingness to answer all my deeply personal questions about how hard things had been and how they each endured and are working to overcome, and their presence when I was open about my life was not something I will ever forget.

Trust and access are huge parts of what I do both in front of and behind the camera. I’m not here to dick around with conversations about the weather or entertain fantasies of relational delusion. Give it to me real or pipe down.

And since day one, Jessa and Wayne have been the embodiment of that. Forever grateful when the universe puts something like this in my pathway and I get to walk a few steps with others kind enough to share their scars with me.
