Lose The Trail

Lose The Trail “The place where you lose the trail is not necessarily the place where it ends.” Jason + Molly. Hiking. Mountains. Adventure. Photography.

What is ‘Lose the Trail’? To be clear, we do not endorse blindly wandering off blazed trails into the woods. We want you to enjoy nature. We’ve been lost in the woods before – calculating how long you can survive on your trail mix is not exactly the ‘one with nature’ experience that we want you to have. To us, ‘Lose the Trail’ is more about stepping off the conveyor belt of the masses and seeing what’s off the beaten path. A few years ago we visited Yosemite for the first time. There were about 11,000 people in the park while we were there. Once we got about 1/4 mile up any trail we basically had the place to ourselves. One of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been and the vast majority of people never saw anything that was not connected to a parking lot. We’d like to change that. We recently decided to start a web resource and photography venture to share our love with you! We hope that our adventures inspire you to get outside and see this beautiful earth up close. Happy hiking! Jason and Molly

On this cloudy winter day, we thought a good black+white was in order. This is a bit of an alternate view of the Linn Cove Viaduct. The bridge is normally the focal point, but we love all of the layers beyond the bridge! We just got a 12”x36” metal print of this image that will soon be displayed in our booth at the Kress Emporium in downtown Asheville, NC. If you’re in the area, drop by and view our work!

A couple weeks ago we spent some time around Gorges State Park and Cashiers/Highlands area of NC. One of our stops was John’s Jump Falls, near Sapphire. It’s a beautiful 25’ fall, fairly easy to get to with only a 0.10 mile hike. On this rainy fall day, we had the place all to ourselves! This image is available for purchase on our website, just search “John’s Jump”. #losethetrail #wnc #pisgahnationalforest #waterfall

Reflections of Fall...The fall season is upon us, which means leaves changing colors, fog in the mountains, and great locations to experience it all. This spot checked all the boxes. We spent several hours around this lake near Gorges State Park and Indian Creek that it feeds into. What a scene!

We recently returned from our first trip to Europe, including the French and Swiss Alps. This multi-shot pano was taken in Grindelwald, Switzerland. Standing beneath the Eiger, Schreckhorn, and Jungfrau left us in absolute awe. We can't wait to share more of our European adventures. Stay tuned!

We love these mountain ranges! Layer after layer, it doesn't get much better than the view from Waterrock Knob on the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Western North Carolina mountains!

Our Blue Ridge mountains! We originally shot this range 3 years ago as a part of a much larger panoramic mountain range. This particular section of the range stuck with us. Fast-forward a few years, we decided to go back to the Art Loeb trail (better equipped), just to shoot this mountain range again. When we think of the wonderful Blue Ridge mountains we call home, this is it!

While Lake Louise and Moraine Lake in Banff get most of the crowds and rightfully so, we were blown away by the other sights along the Icefields Parkway, like this one at Bow Lake.

The Many Faces of Antelope Canyon / Another stop we made on our southwest trip was Antelope Canyon. Upper Antelope Canyon and surrounding canyons can be exhilarating, overwhelming, and frustrating, all at the same time. What you’ll see will be unlike anything else, but...

- It’s crowded!
- It’s dusty
- You’ll need a permit to sell images
- And the crowds...

As a photographer, we’d definitely recommend the photographers tour. It costs more, but you can bring a tripod (can’t on regular tour), an absolute necessity for the long exposures needed in a canyon. Also, the photographers tour affords the opportunity to get shots without people in them, as the tour guides will hide other tourists around the corner for you to get the shot. For sun beams, it’s best to tour mid-day, when the sun is at it’s highest point in the sky. If you plan to sell images, you need to get a special use permit ($50 before tour, $200 after the fact). We used the @aacpt_302 for our tour and they were excellent!

Again, the Antelope Canyons are mesmerizing and you should definitely see them, but know what you’re getting into before you go.

Kanarra Creek Falls / UTAH // A highlight from our southwest trip was this canyon just outside of Zion National Park. It requires a fairly strenuous hike upstream to reach these falls, but it’s well worth it. The canyon walls remind you of Antelope Canyon, but without the crowds. When you visit Zion, be sure to save an afternoon for this!

On our trip to the southwest, we spent a couple weeks in Arizona and Utah. While the major attractions like Grand Canyon, Sedona, Zion, etc. get most of the buzz and crowds (and rightfully so)...we loved hiking in the Tonto National Forest right outside of Phoenix. We barely scratched the surface with the Salt River and Superstition Mountains and can’t wait to return and explore more.

The sun sets on the Badlands...We visited the Badlands last summer for approximately 24 hours, as we made our way from the parks in Alberta, back to our home in the mountains of North Carolina. This was day 15 in the truck and by this time, we were unbelievably ready to climb into our own bed again. So, we didn’t give the Badlands the attention they deserved. But in the brief time at the park, the sun put on quite a show! We amassed many images that we adore and want to go back for more! The landscape is so uniquely magnificent and the park was empty compared to Yellowstone and Glacier. Please visit the #badlands. You won’t be disappointed!

The Deep Gap Trail is rough and challenging, but a very rewarding hike. Starting at the Mt. Mitchell summit, the trail begins through a forest of spruce and balsam fir trees. Hiking along the ridgeline, the trails summits Mt. Craig at 0.85 miles, with most likely the best view on the trail. Mt. Craig (6,647’) is second-highest peak in the eastern US (second only to Mt. Mitchell 6,684’). The trail continues along the Black Mountains, traversing multiple 6,000’+ peaks before descending to Deep Gap campsite at roughly 4.5 miles. You can hike this out-and-back trail from either direction and can turn around at any point. Be aware that the temperatures can be up to 20* lower than that of nearby Asheville because of the elevation. See you out there...

Early mornings in Wyoming...

My journal entry from (7/1/18), the day this image was taken:
Day 5: 4:30am - We woke to the alarm alerting us that sunrise was soon to follow. We climbed out of the back of the truck to a chilly 41* start to the day, packed up, and drove to the T.A. Moulton Barn on Mormon Row. Upon arriving, we noticed there were a couple of photographers already there, Bill and his wife. Bill was on sabbatical and a regular to these parts, and offered up some great suggestions and tips (including a little known waterfall in Yellowstone). As sunrise grew closer, a few other photographers trickled in. The sunrise wan’t epic, but the experience...unforgettable. Off to Schwabacher’s Landing and then breakfast at Signal Mountain Lodge!

Our most liked images of 2018! What a year it was! We took an epic 17 day summer road trip, truck camping through 13 states and Canadian provinces, tallying almost 7,000 miles. We camped in the Great Smoky Mountains, hiked to beautiful waterfalls and vistas around our home in Asheville, NC, and even found our way to the coast a couple of times.

We appreciate the follows, shares, and likes (15.8k) over the last year! We’re excited for 2019! We want to experience the Oregon Coast and plans are being made for a pretty big European trip! Stay tuned...

First Light...

It can be difficult while camping in the truck to wake up, pack up for the day, prepare for a morning in the 40’s, drive from the campsite to the previously scouted location, and be ready to shoot well before the 5:40am sunrise. But, that’s the life of landscape photographers and we love it! We hope you enjoy this image from Schwabacher’s Landing in Grand Teton National Park.

Icefields Parkway / Jasper, AB // As we drove south from Jasper National Park to Banff, this was our view as we approached the Columbia Icefield. Straight ahead is Mt. Athabasca (11,453’) and to the right is the Athabasca Glacier. We stopped at the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre for breakfast with an incredible view of the glacier! However, it was dispiriting to learn of the startling rate this glacier is retreating each year. We’re appreciative to see it when we did.

Tangle Falls / Jasper, AB // This beautiful waterfall can be viewed from the road (Icefields Parkway) or you can climb the falls for different perspectives. We arrived just after sunrise and had the whole place to ourselves! These falls were resplendent with the rock and foliage surrounding them and we couldn’t comprehend that we had driven right by without noticing them just a couple days prior. With so much to do and see in Jasper, we’re already talking about our next trip!

Jasper National Park / Alberta // On our drive from Maligne Lake back to our campsite in Jasper, we rounded a corner and were dumbfounded by the vista awaiting our presence. We safely, but swiftly pulled the truck off the road and absorbed everything that was happening in the scene. Driving the Icefields Parkway and around Jasper is one of the most amazing drives we’ve done, right up there with Going-to-the-Sun Rd. in Glacier National Park, Hwy. 1 around Big Sur in California, and the drive into Yosemite National Park. What’s the most scenic drive you been on?

Moraine Lake / Jasper, AB // Visiting Moraine Lake was possibly THE highlight of our summer road trip! We cruised the lake by boat and stopped at this idyllic setting for some photographs. Along the shores we saw elk and deer, and on the drive back to town, we watched a family of bears eating berries roadside. It was an unforgettable day!

When you’re in Jasper, you must visit Maligne Lake. Take the boat cruise and upgrade to the Through the Lens Cruise. Our tour guide and Jasper native, Ross Pugh, was so knowledgeable of the area and told some fantastic stories! We can’t wait to return again...

High Falls / Lake Glenville // We spent a long spring weekend in Sapphire, NC and visited a few waterfalls in the area. High Falls and Hatcher Falls (further down river) were gorgeous, but even more spectacular was the trail to the falls. Beautiful undergrowth of trillium, ferns, flaming azaleas, and much more saddled the trail. Burly bridges hewn from fallen trees guide you safely through the traverse landscape. Do yourself a favor and spend a few hours exploring this stunning area.

Lower Falls at Yellowstone National Park // We went to a local photographers shop and he said his favorite spot in Yellowstone was Artist Point in the middle of the night. We weren’t able to go at that time this trip, but will on our next Yellowstone visit. Nonetheless, the 300’ waterfall was raging and the landscape was so rugged compared to the rest of Yellowstone. Tip: go early or late in the day to avoid the crowds.

Badlands National Park // Heading to the Badlands from Glacier, Banff, Jasper... some of the most dramatic landscapes we'd ever seen... we were not expecting to be impressed. We thought we'd stop by, check another park off our list.

We were in for a surprise. The Badlands are magical, they transform as the light moves at sunrise/sunset. If you have not been, it's worth the trip. Not as an afterthought but as the main event.
