Looking through my feed, you might think I have a thing for chairs 🫣

It’s not all about the chair itself, but more about all of the people that could have or will sit there. As a photographer, I imagine the story and the feeling the experience provokes. Design is the impetus to that story.

I also way overthink everything, so there’s that 😂 It could just be a chair. 🪑

I am sure someone out there is saying don’t talk up the competition. I don’t care. Kelly with Kelly Shotwell | Branding & Product Photography and Kelly Shotwell | Portrait & Wedding Photography deserves all the talk. Her photography is incredible and I have every bit of confidence in her to capture the best shot. Next time you need a photographer, look at who photographers hire, they are probably the best.

Also, community over competition always. I am here to build people up, not tear them down.

Did I lose my marbles? No… but I think I saw some in the Peace Garden.

Let me explain.

If you don’t know me, community is really important to me. So, for the first time, I joined a meetup with the Asheville Camera Club. We started at The Whale and then made our way to the Peace Garden in West Asheville. If you’ve never been, it’s like stepping into a place your fever dream could have imagined. It borders on a nightmare, yet somehow there’s this incredible sense of play, curiosity, and intrigue.

And honestly? It felt really good to step outside the boundaries of a professional shoot and just… photograph for fun. No client. No shot list. No expectations. Just wandering around, noticing things, experimenting, and seeing what caught my eye.

I’d encourage any photographer to do this every once in a while: photograph something unexpected. Play with a new idea. Build community. Get outside your usual environment. Throw the rule book out the window.

Photography can create a little tunnel vision when you’re constantly thinking about what a client needs, what will perform, what looks “right,” or what you’re supposed to be creating.

Sometimes you just need to see another side of the picture…and maybe find a few marbles along the way.
