Transformation in motion at Greenville County Square. Spanning nearly 40 acres in downtown Greenville, SC, this massive mixed-use redevelopment is reshaping the heart of the city with new public spaces, commercial hubs and residential living. For the past 18 months, Asheville Droneworks has been on-site documenting the site’s evolution. When managing a multi-phase build of this scale, ground-level views only tell half the story. High-resolution aerial progression tracking provides project managers, developers, and stakeholders with unique site intelligence.

This is one component of a major ecological recovery project spanning roughly 18 miles of waterways within the Enoree Ranger District of the Sumter National Forest in South Carolina. The massive initiative included extensive earthwork to reconnect McCluney Branch back to its natural floodplain. The effort helps to stabilize the watershed and breath new life into the forest ecosystem, protecting vital habitats and preserving the natural landscape.

The restoration of the Upper Forney Creek watershed in eastern Lincoln County is a Catawba Lands Conservancy project focused on restoring struggling stream habitats and improving local water quality. This environmental effort is regionally significant, safeguarding drinking water while supporting the Forney Creek Trail, a vital segment of the Carolina Thread Trail network. By healing this vital waterway, the project ensures long-term ecological benefits for local wildlife while strengthens the connected greenway systems that enrich Charlotte Metro communities.

I’ve been on so many of these environmental restoration projects over the last few years. This ranks right up close to the top of my “most gorgeous sites” category.

This is Three Paces Mitigation Bank, in the Cumberland Region of TN. It is a stream and wetland restoration project designed to reverse decades of environmental degradation. Permanently protected under a conservation easement held by Unique Places to Save, the project restored over 6,000 linear feet of highly eroded stream channels within the Caney Fork River watershed.

This was my 4th time out to document the progression of this project in Cleveland County, NC. With engineering by River Mechanics, the project stabilizes critical Raw Water Intake infrastructure serving over 50,000 residents at the volatile confluence of K**b Creek and the First Broad River, ensuring uninterrupted raw water delivery and dramatically increasing efficiency at the treatment plant.

By capturing these complex structural elements, Asheville Droneworks provides key high-resolution documentation supporting various aspects of this regionally-significant infrastructure upgrade.

Switching things up from my usual aerial view! Saturday at Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium for the Kids at Bays event was amazing. The park rangers, city administrators, and tireless volunteers who made this day happen were incredible. And, the public turnout was higher than ever! Every booth and experience was a masterclass in hands-on learning, from up-close wildlife encounters to interactive planting stations. Bays Mountain is a vibrant and inclusive retreat that might still be a bit under the radar for the Tri-Cities.

The crew at McDowell Trails Association came through again this weekend for the 5th year in a row of the Rock n’ Roller, a premier cycling tour throughout McDowell County. New this year, the event was hosted by Foothills Watershed in Old Fort, an incredible venue for the event!

Saturday communities from Hickory to Asheville celebrated as the 1st locomotive on the reconstructed tracks made its way through Western North Carolina. One of the most historic sections of this line is known as “the Old Fort loops,” an engineering feat connecting the town of Old Fort to the summit of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Ridgecrest. These photos are from downtown Old Fort, where the train made a ceremonious stop at the historic depot before beginning the journey up the mountain.
