These are only a SMALL glimpse into the reality of what Helene destroyed in Western North Carolina. I debated on whether or not I should share these images. I took them a week after the storm cleared and cried as I walked along the River Arts District.
Overwhelm doesn’t fully grasp the feeling when you see the devastation that so many are encountering. This was a place filled with artists, chefs, baristas, and business owners.
Can you imagine waking up after a 3 day storm to not only discover that homes were destroyed, cars buried under mud, stores completely wiped away, and hundreds of people dead. Of all that was ruined, your place of business was one of them.
Can you imagine having to pay a mortgage on a building that no longer stands? Employees to pay. Insurance not helping you.
Can you imagine not being able to charge your phone, cook a meal, flush a toilet, or take a shower? FOR WEEKS! There are still so many people without power or water. I only received internet service a few days ago and kept reminding myself of how privileged I am.
And yet, life goes on.
For those who don’t live here, it’s not your problem. But for us, it’s a long road of recovery. It’s pain. Disbelief. Confusion.
The first portrait is of Hannah Rothstein, an artist who was cleaning out what once was her place of business in the River Arts District. A real person, with a real life, a real story, and a real loss. She is one of thousands.
The storm may have passed but we are still recovering. Please be kind. Be gentle. Be helpful.
Consider donating to one of the many business owners who are unable to open their stores or restaurants for weeks or months from now.
If you’d like to see more photos without the Instagram crop, let me know. I have 60 photographs.
