We conducted our first advanced palladium workshop last weekend. As usual with our workshops, they expanded and adapted to the interests of the participants. We covered a lot - palladium printing, platinum-palladium printing, gold-toning palladium and platinum, cyanotype, cyanotype toning, cyanotype over palladium and gum over palladium - along with a smattering of digital negatives and how to gelatin size prints.

As we mentioned yesterday, we did a pile of small cyanotype prints to do toning experiments on. Bob S. is looking over the huge range of print tones that are possible by varying the pH and timing of the bleach and the type of acid used for redeveloping the print. Print tones from slate gray to purple to green are all possible.

Our workshops give people the chance to make a lot of prints. Here is Bob S. evaluating a second layer on his gum over palladium print. The drying line shows the cyanotypes we printed so participants would have the opportunity to try different toning methods on little 4x5 prints that can serve as references when they return to their home studio.

The last day is always a bit of a frenzy to get additional layers of gum applied. Here Bob is drying a gumover palladium print with one layer applied so he can get another one coated, exposed and processed.

Our final workshop of the year was taught by the always-wonderful Diana Bloomfield. Her tricolor gum classes are always a favorite and in this workshop everyone had a busy print-filled three day experience in learning the intricacies of tricolor gum printing.

Because the prints need to dry between coats of gum, everyone had 4-6 prints in process at any given point in the day. Taking a print out to dry in the sun gives everyone plenty of time to take a breather and enjoy the camaraderie.

With anywhere from 3 to 6 or 7 coats of gum on each print, it is important to keep track of what you did, and make a plan for any additional coats of gum that may be needed to make the print look the way it is envisioned. Paula is discussing with Diana what she has done, and what else remains to be done to make the print.

It's all business once the prints are being made. Jess and Baba are mixing the next coat of gum that they will then apply to their prints.

Jess is holding her elegant still life photo printed in color gum. This print was particularly interesting to watch as the all the low-key parts of the image gradually took form and volume as each additional color and coat was added to the print.

We completed our first advanced DTP polymer photogravure workshop this weekend. The three days covered advanced calibration techniques, making large prints, gilding, and multiple plate printing with duotones.

In this photo, Todd shows his large print of a snowy landscape made from an aerial drone. Inking and wiping and printing large plates is a lot more work than small plates, but everyone in the workshop loved the challenge.
