“The High Bridge” in Saluda, North Carolina is a historic three-concrete open-spandrel arch bridge, built in 1927, that spans the Green River Gorge on Old US 176. Once the highest bridge of its kind in the eastern U.S., it was replaced in 2001, now serves as a graffiti-covered but popular pedestrian, photography, and hiking spot, though not officially developed as a scenic park. While there were early hopes for it to become a tourist attraction, similar to the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, it was never offically converted.

The Breakfast Room, Biltmore Estate

Asheville, North Carolina

A stunning, intimate dining space used by the Vanderbilt family. It was designed for more casual daily meals, unlike the massive Banquet Hall. The room features beautiful hand-tooled, embossed leather wall coverings and a highly decorated ceiling. The room is accented with striking red marble. A grand limestone fireplace serves as the heart of the room. The room contains cleverly concealed doors that blend seamlessly into the ornate walls. These hidden doors allowed staff to enter and serve hot meals without interrupting the guests. You can spot two famous portraits by the artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir hanging on the walls: "Young Algerian Girl" and "Child with an Orange".
Breakfast was a nourishing meal where guests and family gathered before starting their busy day. Guests helped themselves to a generous buffet of meats, eggs, and fresh baked goods laid out on a side table.

The Banquet Hall's triple fireplace is located on the far wall of the room. It is a single, massive structure built from carved limestone. It acts as a visual divider, splitting the massive wall into three distinct sections to match the three large 16th-century Flemish tapestries hanging above it.

The structure is so large that it contains three separate fireboxes, allowing staff to build three simultaneous fires. During George Vanderbilt's time, these fires provided necessary heat for the expansive space. Today, the triple fireplace serves as a centerpiece, especially during the Candlelight Christmas Evenings when all three are lit.
