Mask On (Lizzo's "Good as Hell" Covid-19 Parody)

The last two weekends, our family had fun producing a song and music video that we're calling "Mask On." Thank you Lizzo for the inspo, thank you Annabelle Monte and Levi Monte for having fun with this, and thank you Matt Monte for knowing a few things about music. With 40 days in quarantine, we needed something to do. Here is our rendition of Lizzo’s catchy song “Good as Hell” as inspired by current events.

Homeschool life. It was fun for a little while. Today I made a few rules:

1. Have fun.
2. Get your work done.
3. Ask, what can I do about it?
4. No complaining!
5. No cell phones.
6. Wear clothing.

By not complying with rules 2-6, students lose their cell phone and laptop for the rest of the day.

Over the weekend, we loaded up the car with the kids and the dogs for what I'm calling social distancing “park hopping." We routed 3-5 parks with the hope that 2 would still be open (some are technically open but parking lots are closed). We landed at Claude Moore Park, the Potomac Heritage Trail and Algonkian Park. I shot the sunset off of Snickersville Pike last night.

Friends, I'm excited to share happy news with you today. Over the last few months, I have been thinking about returning to the classroom. In the longterm, I hope to be able to teach at Northern Virginia Community college or another student centered institution. I last taught at NOVA, as we call it, back in 2006 before I had my daughter Annabelle.

Over the last 13 years, I have been able to build my life around my children and family which has been my #1 priority since I became a mother. My children, my husband, and my community will always be the center of my life. I am grateful for being called to work as a photographer because it has allowed me to earn a living and meet amazing people in the D.C. area. I feel so lucky that I have been able to work as an artist. And I've been able to contribute financially to my family and to my community through this work. Much of the volunteer work I have been asked to do over the years has called on my photography skills. I met many of my closest friends through my photography business.

As my children get older, I have decided to find a way back to higher education and the classroom. I am applying for teaching positions and I have started tutoring ESOL students through Loudoun County Public Library. I'm studying for the GRE and will begin applying to PhD programs in the coming months. The entire process, should I be able to go back to school with a fellowship full time, will take me about 5 years. If I do not receive a fellowship, then I plan to teach part-time, go to school part-time and continue as a photographer part-time. And yes, I will continue to support Loudoun County Magazine and the Northern Virginia Diaper Bank because my community is important to me. Education and poverty alleviation are two causes that no matter where I earn a living, I will always work on behalf of.

In this photo I am sharing today, I am tutoring one of my ESOL students Kenny over Zoom. We started our sessions in February and will finish his 8 weeks over video chat.

I want all of my photography friends and supporters to know that I am so thankful for all of you and I hope you will support me as I make a transition back into teaching.

Have a great day!

~Jessica

I frequently work from home but today I tried something new for a meeting with the Northern Virginia Diaper Bank where I handle community outreach and public relations. Today we “zoomed” to discuss the ongoing and growing demand for supplies among our local families here in Loudoun and Fairfax Counties. Zoom is a wonderful tool in that it allows you to meet with multiple people online. I also like that it has a screen sharing capability so that you can show your coworkers what you have been working on. Has anyone else tried Zoom or do you have a recommendation for other video chat applications? If yes I’d love to hear from you🙌🙌🙌 Together we can #stopthespread

Yesterday at sunset I photographed the cherry blossoms in my neighborhood. I used a Nikon D810 with a Nikon 24-70 2.8 vr and a Nikon 35 mm 1.4. I set the ISO to 200 and took most shots at f/2.8 with shutter speeds between 1/100 to 1/500. When I switched to my 35 mm, I shot primarily at f/1.4.

I’m plugging my social media discussion at the Brambleton Library tomorrow at 12:30. I love social media, photography and writing because I’m an introvert—it’s true! To anyone whom I’ve talked the ear off of, my apologies. You must have made me comfortable enough to share myself. Thank you for that🙏 But please know that I know it’s a bad habit and I try to reign it in😉 #socialmedia #learn #grow #engage #community #marketing #jessicamontephotography #loudouncountymagazine

Dura Eurpos and Other Art at Yale’s Art Gallery

So grateful for the opportunity to view Dura-Europos which features the earliest known depictions of Christ from 235 A.D. I especially appreciated the fresco that may depict the Parable of the Ten Virgins. More on that, other art now at Yale's Art Gallery, and my college days at Southern over at the Jessica Monte Photography website.

As 2019 comes to an end, I can’t help but think about the lessons I’ve learned in the last year.

1. I learned, or rather remembered that my time is valuable and should be spent on my priorities, like my daughter Annabelle, my son Levi and my husband Matt.

2. What I love more than anything in the world is learning. Whether it’s through experiences, hearing people’s stories, connecting with others’ lives, seeing a film or art show or traveling, I feel most alive when I’m learning.

3. It’s good to let go and be open to change. This year I went through many changes. Many were good, some were hard, and yet I can look back now and see that all were needed.

In 2020, I’d like to enjoy a simpler life. I’d like to be more present for my family, help and serve my community, and make time for myself. I’d also like to have more fun😉 since I have a tendency to push myself too hard.

Wishing you all a peaceful and happy new year in 2020✨ Much love, Jessica

Christmas Day was so good. Presents, a nap, and a long walk with the dogs.We had a little Christmas miracle too because I cooked! Prime rib (for Matt and the kids), sweet potatoes and caramelized onions, roasted broccoli and butternut curry coconut soup followed by homemade chocolate mousse on brownies. Matt and Levi gave me an A. Annabelle Monte, my foodie, said, “Good job Mom.” Phew! So I think I’ll give this cooking thing another shot over the holiday break. Wishing everyone a happy Christmas night☺️✨🎄 @ Brambleton, Virginia
