Shooting in infrared brings out the turbulent clouds over our yard in Delmont, PA as storms approach. (Mine is the white one in the back 😁) I love infrared because it creates such interesting images that we don't normally get to see, whether it is strong contrasts like this 850nm black and white, ethereal monochromes from the 950nm, or otherworldly false color images like a 590nm.

Two years ago today I had one of the most amazing experiences photographing the night sky. The Aurora Borealis was visible to the naked eye over Western Pennsylvania and I got so many amazing images that night. I went to Spruce Flats Bog in Forbes State Forest, Somerset County, PA and spent probably three cold hours watching the incredible display and took over 400 images, including my Astrophotography Trifecta: The moon setting behind the trees, the beautiful Northern Lights, AND The Milky Way in the background.

We're under the leading edge cloud band feeding Hurricane Isaias - it means nothing for us but a lot of clouds. Clouds means processing astro images instead of taking them, and here is my final image of M45 - The Pleiades, also known as The Seven Sisters or the Subaru stars. My first image, The Pleiades looked like seven blue stars, but more integration brings out the fine clouds of dust that are backlit by the sisters. This image is 6-1/2 hours of integration over 3 nights. When I was little, I thought the Pleiades was the Little Dipper because of their star pattern. M45 is one of our closest star clusters at 440 light years away. Shot from my Bortle 5 backyard in Armbrust, PA

Saint Vincent's is one of those buildings that never gets old when I take a photo of it. I was through Latrobe, PA last week and the fall colors were just beginning. We had a very wet summer which usually means a very vibrant fall, so I'm looking forward to leaf season this year!

IC63 - The Ghost in Cassiopeia - I was "done" with this project and moved on to the next one. This is nowhere near the image I am after, but here's an interesting thing about astrophotography processing: This was only about a half hour of RGB broadband imaging in order to get the stars to go with my narrowband data. Once I got to the star removal part, I found that the leftover starless (that was just going to get pitched) had some interesting color and I think I need to dedicate another night to RGB data. I'm liking where this is going!

Last week we had to run an errand out to Berlin, PA and since the ridges are always cooler than they are here, their color starts to pop earlier. I snapped this shot through the windshield along Mason-Dixon Highway as we were headed out of town in beautiful Somerset County.

Just a reminder that I have prints available in my shop. The link is available if you click my name to go to my page. (Why isn't it here? NGC2024, The Flame Nebula, usually only has a supporting actor role in the wider images of the Horsehead and Flame nebulae but Big Blue made the Flame the lead role in this longer narrowfield shot. Of course, Alnitak couldn't pass up the opportunity to photobomb and say "look at me sneaking in on the side!" This is just over 2 hours of 60-second subexposures. I certainly plan on getting more integration on this to bring out the nebulosity more.
