Remembering Chesty

Part два of the series. The is an interesting juxtaposition from flowers to weapons of war. Ukraine has always been known as a beautiful and developing state. Unfortunately, since Russia's invasion starting February 24, 2022, many Ukrainian citizens have found themselves taking up arms to defend every inch of their home. Maybe one of the flower frames next to one of these frames would produce a great diptych.

I've waited years to take such photos. Ever since I have been exposed to Ukrainian culture, I knew I had to do something traditional. My first attempt would have been in Ukraine when I visited this past New Years. Plans changed and we didn't have enough time for shoots. Then Ukraine became invaded. There are a number of things we tried to do to show solidarity with Ukraine: Attending rallies/protests, Writing our congressman and even meeting with his Chief of Staff to discuss our concerns, fighting disinformation and Russian state propaganda, spreading awareness and educating our inner circles on social media. We felt it was time to take these traditional photos to show more Ukrainian spirit, but with a twist more appropriate for wartime Ukraine.

Standby for a follow on post which depicts the concept not only a beautiful Ukraine, but a strong one.

"Two-Time Emmy Winning"

Today I had the opportunity to photograph someone who provides a lot of inspiration for me. Ironically, I come from a heavy photography background and him, a background in cinema. I have made video products for the Marine Corps before and I've enjoyed it, but I never poured all of my soul into it like I had done with photography. I knew from the moment I met Rick Robinson that I would get along with him well. Robinson made it a point that I needed to be "that" someone the Commandant of the Marine Corps sees and notices every time we work with him.

I can't really say for sure that the CMC notices who I am or understands what I do, but one thing for sure is that I definitely pretend the CMC does. What I mean to say is that I have been instilled a new sense of confidence, especially in front of the last person you'd want to upset in the Marine Corps. I've also had grown to fall in love with cinematography and am often torn between the world of which I've always known in still photography and the importance of visual storytelling through motion media.

In both worlds, the possibilities are endless and can stretch as far as your imagination. I have also developed a hunger to challenge myself with difficult lighting situations that require someone with patience to solve and unravel it like a puzzle. I don't know what the end result of my destiny is in the visual storytelling arts but what I do know is that Robinson helped me understand that I will never be the master of visual storytelling because this art is forever evolving and the best way to move forward is to be humble about your knowledge and seek more.
