Before a video looks good, each frame needs to stand out (they're photographs, really).

That’s why photography skills matter on every shoot. Composition, light, and timing must be carefully considered whether we're shooting a photo or a video. Knowing where to place someone, how to use the light from a window, and when to wait for the right expression is everything to captivating storytelling, even if viewers can’t say why.

Some videographers simply observe. They point the camera at what’s happening and record it. Others tell stories with their images, choosing what goes in the frame, what stays out, and what the viewer notices first. That’s where the artistry comes in, and truly understanding photography is critical because a still image should have a lot to say on its own.

At (and outside of) A HUGE Production, Chris is an amazing and award-winning photographer. In college, he worked in the darkroom and photo lab, helping other students learn to see light, expose a print, and fix what wasn’t working. That kind of teaching builds a habit of looking closely and knowing right away what makes up a great shot. He notices what others miss and can explain why a shot works or doesn’t.

That eye is part of every one of our videos at A HUGE Production. We want each frame to be worth stopping on. Videography is photography in motion, after all.

Confession: We sneak wildlife into a lot of our videos. If an eagle’s overhead, a heron’s in the shallows, deer graze in the distance, bees and hummingbirds hum in a garden nearby... they’re making the cut... even if the video’s not about them at all! They're true stars, perpetual tourists and connoisseurs, part of our surroundings, hidden in plain sight, and they play the best versions of themselves--no directing needed.

Where did you see us last month? September was a busy one for us at A HUGE Production! Here's what and who we filmed:

Kids and Families
A camp for kids with life-altering medical conditions, housing for families with children receiving hospital treatment.

Keeping Community Running
A city mayor, four different police departments, one public utility, a water treatment plant, a senior center, and a food bank event.

Faith and Tradition
An outreach pastor, a church, a 9/11 remembrance ceremony, and a tribal sweat lodge.

Outdoors and Animals
A youth rowing foundation, a mountain adventure nonprofit (three times), youth soccer, and a wolf sanctuary.

Small Businesses
Two electrical companies, a cupcake bakery, and three retail stores.

Culture and a Little Thrill
A concert, a museum, and a nonprofit event with K9s, a helicopter, and a car show with a Lamborghini.

While we write storyboards for our videos, we always plan for the unexpected (actually, we count on it!).

Our curiosity fuels our creativity. For example, we were filming volunteers working, and we noticed a woman in the corner writing one word on each bag before it was filled with food and hygiene items: “Friend.”

We asked her why.

She told us she was once homeless herself. She wanted the person who opened that bag to know a friend had packed it, that someone cared, and that there was reason for hope.

So, we pivoted and brought our camera over to her and filmed her in action...one bag at a time.

Sometimes, the real stars (the humble, quiet, unsung heros) become the stars that shine the brightest.

One of the coolest projects we've been a part of! Angela co-wrote two books with two other local business owners, Lori (also the books' illustrator!) of Happy Little Painter Co, LLC and Tina of Hometown Candle Co. The community sponsored the printing costs, and in turn, their businesses were written and illustrated into the stories and within the pages. Each of the authors also appeared in the books. 😁 The best part is that, together, we raised $5,500 to give toward Arlington student scholarships to be distributed this Spring. And, another book (the third of the trilogy) will be following. We will be accepting sponsorships if your business would like to be written into the last book - a supercool, unique opportunity! THANK YOU to all who've supported this project.

Ahhh, the Scene Clean. 😂 Or, as we call it: "Leave No Trace Filming."
From washing a kid actor's handprints off of a bakery window to putting back the plants Angela borrowed from every cubicle in the office, if we set up a scene, when we finish, we clean!

"Your heart is a sun and it shines."
As Fall is in full swing, it's fun to look back a couple of months to one of the highlights of summer -- celebrating National Night Out with our local first responders. We're grateful to the men and women who work day and night to keep our communities safe. We see the heartbeats behind the badges; we see them drop everything to take calls and run toward danger without hesitation; we see the care and dedication they have for the people they serve. And seeing them have some fun at NNO? We were there for it.

For this year's Arlington Community Food Bank Farm to Table Gala, we produced a short film highlighting their Kid Smart programs in action. The goal was simple, but nuanced: help people feel what it means for a child to have (or not have) enough, rather than just explain how the programs work.

We wrote the storyboard and script, brought the props, then directed, filmed, and edited it from start to finish. Major kudos to the Food Bank's team and the young actors who brought it to life. From parks and downtown streets to a local bakery, a community garden on a farm, and the Mobile Market, it was a busy filming day (10 locations!), and a good one.

The best part came after the live screening. The Food Bank raised record funds at the event, and we are pleased to have played a role in supporting the children and families in our community.
